"Meme-ify" - Research Project with Framer Framed and Young Blood Initiative

A team of six multi-disciplinary performance artists gathered digitally and asked if humour can be a new strategy to combat activist fatigue and be a radical self-care method. With Young Blood Initiative and Framer Framed, we had a five-day residency at the end of September, including an open action research session and a final sharing/performance.

"The event reminds us that art is a form of building, a joining together, a productive gesture. Starting from a virtual space, art connects a community of kindred spirits in pursuit of alternative visions of care and politics." - Emily Lee's report for Framer Framed. Read more here

"I'M NOT SURE ABOUT YOU, BUT I NEED ..." - Live Performance at Goethe-Institut Hongkong

Yes! We made it happen! A live performance with live audience during the pandemic.

With Goethe-Institut Hongkong, we adapt this interactive piece that was premiered in London June 2019 to their gallery and black box space in Wan Chai, Hong Kong. The two sold out shows were performed last Friday and Saturday with great reception.

As time and space progress, this work, which was premiered in June 2019 in London, is now taking a new form and carrying different and perhaps more indescribable nuances. This edition in Hong Kong is also very special for us as it makes the first live work we presented after the start of the pandemic.

What's next?

Our flight from Hong Kong to London is on 30 October 2020. We know that we are going to miss this beautiful subtropical city a lot. The heat, the blue sky, the people, the mountains, the streets. This is the place we were born and we grew up in. This is home.

This department is again going to be difficult and we will try our best to stay connected and keep hunting for the next opportunity to present and develop works in our home city.

For the rest of this year, we will be mainly focusing on researching and sharing. We are and will be involved in several different panels, reading groups and sharings, in topics related to contemporary performance, digital media and activism.

We are also open for directing, training, advising, performing and other collaborations and bookings in Europe from November on. Please contact us through email: info@ghostandjohn.art

Two Panels That We Will Be On

"Space for Change" - With CSC Centro per la Scena Contemporanea

28 October 2020 from 2pm - Conversations in the digital space facilitated by Monica Gillette, with interventions by Nora Chipaumire, Ghost and John, Yasmeen Godder, Itzik Giuli, Masako Matsushita, Jakevis Thomason.

There are many ways to be an activist. From subtle to outright, from private to public.
2020 has challenged us to act – to act when stages have been shut down, yet social and environmental injustices have been surging. In this online gathering we will meet various artists who’s necessity to respond to the time we are living in has opened new spaces for performance and action.
This gathering of artists and their developing practices marks a moment to reflect and fortify the newly emerging practices and actions for change.

"#MilkTeaAlliance" - With Asia Art Activism

The term "Milk Tea Alliance" is a meme that arose from the dispute between Thailand and China pundits on Twitter. This term reflects the fact that people have spent more time on the internet world since the pandemic, which has also brought additional conflict, an increased focus on public issues, and the exhibition of artworks online. These activities inevitably draw the attention of governmental authorities.

This panel will discuss the digitalisation of artworks and surveillance, and the strategies used by artists and activists towards visibility and invisibility, particularly in socially and politically charged arts projects.

A roundtable discussion with Candy ChoiGhost & JohnRuss Ligtas, and Thái Hà
