Welcome to The Rainbow Connection!  A monthly newsletter highlighting programs, upcoming events, and more, brought to you by Rainbow Rose Center, serving York County's LGBTQIA+ Community.
A Message from the President

Dear Readers,

Welcome! Thank you for being a valuable part of the Rainbow Rose Center! You have helped us grow and change so much this past year. In your desire for a more inclusive York County, you have empowered the Rainbow Rose Center to be an engine for change. Your participation last year at the first-of-its-kind virtual Equality Fest proves York County is on its way to being the welcoming community we want. We look forward to celebrating with you in the first ever York County Pride, presented by WellSpan Health, this June 5th! The event will be virtual again, and will connect you with great resources. They will help you live a happy, healthy, and safe life in York County. This year, we’re looking to expand in a lot of ways.

Stay tuned for updates on our exciting plans for 2021! That includes new programs and exciting events that promote your health!

Interested in getting involved? Volunteer or send a donation.
These both directly impact the inclusivity of our York County community.

Stay safe and stay healthy!

Sincerely,
Tesla Taliaferro (he/him/his)

CLOTHING SWAP!
Fashion is an important part of life. It can mean the difference between finding a job and being sidelined during an interview, between feeling confident and authentic and feeling out of place in your own skin. For members of the LGBTQIA+ community, finding clothing can be a huge challenge. We are more likely to struggle with self-worth, less likely to feel safe in clothing stores and changing rooms, and experience poverty at a higher rate than our peers. We believe that everyone deserves the opportunity to find a look that reflects their inner selves in a safe and supportive environment. To that end, we are currently collecting donations of new and used clothing, shoes, and other necessities which we will distribute, at no charge, during a Clothing Swap this summer.

We are most in need of shoes and gender affirming clothing, like wigs or binders, but anything helps! This is a great way to get some spring cleaning done while helping a worthy cause. If you have items to donate please contact the community engagement committee at community@rainbowrosecenter.org to arrange a pickup time.
PROGRAMS UPDATE
The Rainbow Rose Center (RRC) is pleased to announce its newly formed Programs Committee! We are off to a great start with programs having received a grant from Bradbury-Sullivan Center in Allentown, PA to provide tobacco cessation, education and support to LGBTQIA+ individuals, particularly youth, in York County. If you need information on smoking cessation or are interested in quitting contact the Pennsylvania Quitline at 1-800-QUIT-NOW or contact the RRC Programs Committee at programs@rainbowrosecenter.org.

We are also laying the groundwork for two virtual support groups in late spring/early summer. The stigma and fear associated with being HIV positive can cause people to close themselves off from others and even cause feelings of guilt or shame. However, meeting other individuals who are HIV positive that share the same concerns, fears and medical issues can reduce and relieve stress from the daily challenges of living with HIV. The HIV support group allows individuals living with HIV to come together to discuss the challenges they face so they do not have to face them alone, reducing physical and emotional isolation.

The current political climate and the rise in mental health issues exacerbated by the pandemic has driven the need for a group specifically tailored to Queer and Transgender Black, Indigenous, and people of color (BIPOC). BIPOC and LGBTQIA+ individuals disproportionately experience biases, structural hurdles, and barriers to treatment and quality care. This monthly peer-led support group is an outlet for LGBTQIA+ People of Color to come together for open discussion in a space that strives to be safe and judgment free.

Keep an eye on our Facebook page and the Rainbow Connection for more information and changes to our programs!
