Dog Training 401

Get WHAT You Want WHEN You Want

This is the fourth article in a series designed to bring the nuts and bolts of dog training directly to dog owners so you can work with your dog at home. Our past articles have explained the laws of behavior, how to change behavior, and how to get your dog to do the right thing. Logically, our next article covers how to get your dog to do what want when you want it.

Cues are our focus in this article. Cues are the key to getting your dog to do what you want, when you want. It’s how you label behaviors, and – once labeled – you can ask for (and get!) them whenever you want. Sounds cool, yeah?

This will help you get control of your dog's behavior, let's get going! Click here to read more...

SDU Talk Now On Demand

ClickerExpo Talks Available on Video

If you've ever wanted to attend ClickerExpo, but didn't know what it was all about, here's your chance to get a taste!

Many of the talks given at ClickerExpo were recorded on video! Catch Laurie's talk "At Your Service: Teaching Service Dog Behaviors" here. The 45-minute talk was recorded at the Norfolk, VA ClickerExpo.

If that takes you to an invalid page (it works on my computer, but others have emailed me saying the link was invalid), go to Karen Pryor's Clickertraining.com Video page and type "Laurie Luck" in the video search box. There are LOTS of valuable and interesting talks listed, check 'em all out!

Bonus: Watch Levi fall off the stage (he was unhurt, don't worry) as he gets so into his chewie bone that he forgets he's even on stage!

Levi's Back!

We picked up Levi on our first day of vacation! He spent his first week back with us on Lake Anna with our other dogs enjoying the summer weather on the boat and on the dock.

WATER was the theme of our vacation, as it always is when you live with four water dogs. It was hard to know who loved it more, the people or the dogs.

That's the hallmark of a good vacation!

The report from Service Dogs of Virginia was good! Levi is on track in his training. He made friends, too, while he was there. No surprise...

We'll only have Levi for a few more months, I suspect, as he's approaching the one-year mark.

His training continues, we're refining existing skills (down, back, public appearances) and introducing new ones ("dress" -- stick his head through his collar).

We sure do enjoy him, and will miss the heck out of him when it's time for him to return.

ClickerExpo 2015

We're happy to report that Laurie will be speaking at both ClickerExpo's in 2015!

Expo will be held in beautiful Portland, OR in January and in Dearborn, MI in March.

Registration is open, reserve your spot today!

Laurie will be speaking about two different topics: service dog training with the clicker and an advanced training concept called "fluency."

She'll also be running two Learning Labs (where you can bring your dog to learn right alongside you!).

We'd love to see you at either Expo! It's a great learning experience whether you're a beginner or an advanced trainer. There's something for everyone!
