NIIM is very grateful to Village Roadshow for the opportunity to host this special fundraising event! NIIM received rave reports from everyone who enjoyed French wine, Indian treats from Tandoori Den, healthy delicious nuts from The Royal Nut Company and Bollywood entertainment before watching this delectable movie prior to public release.

Many thanks to Village Roadshow; Scanlan & Theodore; Swisse and other donors for their generosity - everyone left with a smile on their face and great delight from all raffle prize winners.

Public Lectures & Clinical Meetings For Practitioners

This year we have run regular NIIM Public Lectures and Clinical Meetings for Practitioners on topics relevant to the practice of Integrative Medicine. We plan to continue these in 2015 incorporating new topics. We thank our presenters who donate their time for these educational activities.

NIIM 1-Day Symposium ‘Advances in Integrative Medicine’

This educational and highly informative event for integrative medicine practitioners, allied and complementary healthcare professionals, nurses and healthcare students was a resounding success! NIIM’s commitment is to bring together leaders in this multi-disciplinary area of medicine, with a focus on presenting the latest evidence and how this works in practice.

The extensive program included 7 keynote presentations, panel discussion and concurrent workshops. Many thanks to all our speakers, sponsors, supporters, volunteers and staff who contributed to made this special event possible.

Our next symposium is planned for Saturday 28 November 2015.

Mindfulness & Meditation for Wellbeing 3-week course with Seikan Čech at NIIM

Suitable for beginners and those with prior experience, this 3-week course will provide a clear and simple introduction to meditation practice and how to make it a positive and regular part of your life. Seikan Čech is a Zen monk with extensive experience in teaching meditation and mindfulness practice to individuals and groups, including in medical and healthcare settings.

Research

Congratulations to our Director of Research Dr Karin Ried who received an Adjunct A/Professorial appointment at Bond University.

Current NIIM Research Department projects

The ‘AGE at Heart’ trial
Aged Garlic Extract (AGE) for blood pressure and heart health: a 3-month randomised placebo-controlled trial. Recruitment of 100 participants for the trial has now concluded and a full report is being compiled for publication.

Circulating Tumour Cells (CTC) in cancer patients
Circulating Tumour Cells (CTC) and other rare cells are detected using the ISET device (Isolation by Size of Epithelial/ Tumour Cells, Rarecells, France). The CTC test offered at NIIM is the first of its kind available in Australia.

The Cocoa Study
Investigates the effect of an acute dose of cocoa on cardiovascular health, cognition and mood.

The Ginger trial
Conducted by our PhD student, Wolfgang Marx, looks at the effect of ginger for nausea and vomiting in chemotherapy patients.

Regional Hyperthermia Trial
CAs adjunctive cancer therapy is evaluated in NIIM patients. Hyperthermia can increase treatment effectiveness by 25-80%.

More studies are underway for 2015, these include:
  • Cognitive function in relation to Vitamin C status in surgery and cancer patients
  • Comparison of CTC analysis and live blood analysis
  • The effect of cocoa on cognitive function in an older population
  • Electromagnetic wave pain therapy
  • Diabetes Type 1 and BCG vaccine case study
  • Prolotherapy and pain relief
  • The effect of aged garlic extract on cardiovascular function, arterial stiffness and aerobic fitness

Dr Ried’s studies have been widely publicised over the year. She has also featured in the media and presented her research findings at several conferences.
