Islamic Shura Council Newsletter 2021-32
Aug 13, 2021 ~ 5 Muharram 1443
“Indeed, the number of months ordained by God is twelve—in God’s Record since the day He created the heavens and the earth—of which four are sacred*...” (Qur’an 9:36) *These months are Muharram, Rajab, Dhul-Qa`dah, and Dhul-Hijjah.
10th Day of Muharram (Ashura)
The 10th day of Muharram, the day of Ashura, will be next Wednesday, August 18th in accordance with the Fiqh Council of North America.
Muslims during the days of Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) rejoiced on the day they learned from their Jewish neighbors about the significance of this day and their reasons to commemorate it, and started the tradition of fasting it every year. When the Prophet arrived in Madinah in 622 CE, he found that the Jews there fasted on Muharram 10 and asked them the reason for their fasting on this day. They said, "This is a blessed day. On this day God saved the Children of Israel from their enemy (in Egypt) and so Prophet Musa (Moses) fasted on this day giving thanks to God." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, “We are closer to Musa than you are." He fasted on that day and commanded Muslims to fast on this day. (Al-Bukhari)
Many decades later, fifty years after the death of Prophet Muhammad PBUH, a very sad and tragic incident occurred on the same Day of Ashura, which has come to be known in history books as the “Karbala Massacre”. Dozens of members of the family of Prophet Muhammad including his beloved grandson, Al-Husayn RA, were massacred. Their valiant courage amidst injustice is exemplary for all times and places. It reminds us to rededicate ourselves to the principles of sacrificing for the truth and standing up against oppression.
While these two occasions are commemorated differently among Muslims in present times, there is no doubt that every Muslim who claims to follow Prophet Muhammad PBUH and his teachings, will always love Prophet Moses PBUH, and rejoice his victory over Pharaoh, even if he or she doesn’t fast on this day. At the same time, every Muslim dearly loves Al-Husayn RA and will always be sad about the story of his killing, whether he or she participates in anniversary commemorations or not.
May God bestow his peace and blessings upon Prophet Moses, all the previous Prophets, including our beloved Prophet Muhammad and his family and grant us their companionship in the hereafter.
Campaign to Free Imam Jamil Al-Amin
The Islamic Shura Council, a member of the U.S. Council of Muslim Organizations (USCMO), joins their campaign to free Imam Jamil Al-Amin who is serving a life sentence for a crime he did not commit for the last 21 years. Imam Al-Amin, now 77 years old, has gone blind due to being denied cataract surgery where he is incarcerated at the United States Penitentiary in Tucson, Arizona away from his family and attorneys.
Who is Imam Jamil Abdullah Al-Amin? Imam Al-Amin (né Hubert Giroir Brown) was born on October 9, 1943 in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. He became known as H. Rap Brown in the early 1960s. In the 1970s, Imam Jamil converted to Islam. His work thereafter focused on advocating for justice irrespective of race or cultural difference. Imam Jamil went on to create his own Muslim community in the West End of Atlanta, Georgia. The work of Imam Jamil Al-Amin during the late ‘60s, ‘80s and ‘90s, with community-based and gang organization leaders and the development of an urban peace treaty and policy initiative resulted in a 10% drop in crime nationally and a 25% reduction in homicides among Black and Brown youth in the 1990s.
Current Situation: His case is currently under review by the Fulton County Conviction Integrity Unit, in Georgia. There is no evidence placing Imam Jamil at the scene of the crime: no fingerprints, no gun residue, no DNA. In fact, Otis Jackson has been consistent in his confession of the crime for which Imam Jamil is serving a life sentence (giving multiple written sworn statements and testifying in another trial under oath), and evidence corroborates Otis Jackson’s confession.

Report on U.S. Muslims and Suicide
A recent NPR article shines a light on suicide attempts among U.S. Muslims. U.S. Muslims are two times more likely to have attempted suicide compared with other religious groups, according to a study published last month in JAMA Psychiatry. Nearly 8% of Muslims in the survey reported a suicide attempt in their lifetime compared with 6% of Catholics, 5% of Protestants and 3.6% of Jewish respondents.
Researchers attribute the high suicide attempt rate to two factors: religious discrimination and community stigma — both of which, they say, prevent Muslim American communities from seeking mental health services.
Dr. Rania Awaad, director of the Stanford Muslim Mental Health and Islamic Psychology Lab researched and spoke on Religiosity, Coping and Mental Health: Muslims and the COVID-19 Pandemic which is posted on YouTube.
If you or someone you know is struggling with suicidal thoughts, you can contact the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline at 1-800-273-8255 or the Crisis Text Line by texting HOME to 741741. The Khalil Center also offers a crisis line at 1-855-5HELPKC. ISPU’s Muslim mental health toolkit and The Family and Youth Institute's (FYI) toolkits on mental health, relationships, and community, are also available for individuals, leaders, and mental health professionals.

Help Sahaba Initiative start Mobile Food Pantry
Islamic Shura Council member, Sahaba Initiative, needs your help to raise funds for a mobile food pantry to alleviate hunger in the Inland Empire, a region historically difficult for low-income families to obtain food. The mobile pantry will travel to different locations (grocery stores, community centers, schools, homeless shelters, etc.) to deliver fresh fruit, vegetables, and other groceries.
Over the past year, we had to rapidly expand our ability to distribute food! We added new approaches to getting food out to the people in need, including drive-thru distributions where thousands of cars drove through and picked up a bag of food and we began to deliver food to select communities such as the schools, community centers, and senior homes that could not reach us.

State of CA Rental Assistance
The Islamic Shura Council is pleased to announce the State of California’s updated COVID-19 rental and utility assistance.
Whether it’s a health-related event or a significant financial hardship, COVID-19 has affected us all. As our state continues to recover, we are committed to keeping families housed and recognize that California renters and landlords have enough to worry about. We want to make sure that rent and utilities aren’t on that list of worries.
The CA COVID-19 Rent Relief program helps income-eligible households with rent and utilities, both for past due and future payments. The federal Consolidated Appropriations Act of 2021 provides tenant (renter) protection laws and funding to support this program and was signed by Governor Newsom in January 2021.
Depending on the address of your rental property, you may be eligible for a local program. Apply Now to determine which program is right for you.
