Research platform on antibiotic resistance spread through wastewater treatment plants

Newsletter # 4
December 2021

Dear Colleagues,

it is pleasure to present you with a new REPARES Newsletter. I am especially happy to announce that our team published two new scientific papers focused on antibiotic resistance: a review on monitoring antibiotic resistance genes in wastewater environments and a research paper about the role of mobile genetic elements. Besides that, we also produced new video material about antibiotic resistance.
I wish you inspiring reading and all the best for the Christmas period ahead.

News in ARG research
First two REPARES original papers (both in HAZMAT)
The REPARES joint review paper, titled "Monitoring antibiotic resistance genes in wastewater environments: the challenges of filling a gap in the One-Health cycle" delves deeply into threats, strides, issues, and future opportunities in the monitoring of antibiotic resistance genes in wastewater environments.

The second REPARES paper "Development and validation of novel PCR primers for identification of plasmid-mediated colistin resistance (mcr) genes in various environmental settings" proposes and validates a new set of primer detecting mcr-1 – mcr-9 ARGs. The primers proved to be very effective in detecting these sets of ARGs in environmental samples.

REPARES Future plans & actions
  • Bukola ‘Lois’ Ojobe, a 4th Ph.D. student at UCT Prague working on removing pollutants in greywater, is currently on her research stay at Wetsus for a six-month internship. Lois is working on the effect of compromised nanofiltration modules on the overall quality of treated greywater with a special focus on antibiotic resistance genes proliferation in such systems.
  • In April 2022, we will organize a workshop on Project proposal writing. More detailed information will follow at the beginning of next year.
