Playgroup SA

From the Executive Officer...

Carley Jones
Executive Officer - Playgroup SA
Welcome to the November edition of ePlayNews.

Phew! It’s been incredibly busy at Playgroup SA of late. We’ve enjoyed bringing you events such as the Riverland Outdoor Playgroup - where at last, Mother Nature cooperated and we had a glorious sunny day for outdoor Playgroup fun. We shared a sausage and a play with the many families who attended our Twilight Playgroup here at Playgroup SA to celebrate Children’s Week, and finally, we shared a great day at the Zoo with so many members, volunteers, life members and friends.

The Zoo was a fabulous day and I thank all of our members who joined us on the day. Thank you also for your positive feedback regarding the event.  And to all the staff at Playgroup SA and the Adelaide Zoo, thank you, for all your efforts in making the day run smoothly, and who for months prior are busy planning the day’s activities.

In amongst all of these wonderful events, we’ve delivered numerous Messy Play days, Playgroup workshops and released the second edition of our State of Play Magazine.

Term 4 is well and truly underway and it’s hard to imagine we are now in the middle of November and turning our attention to Christmas and the end of year. Feel free to contact the support and development team here at Playgroup SA if you are looking for some ideas on Christmas at your Playgroup and how to be inclusive of all at this time of year.

Thank you again to all volunteers, families, friends and members who commit to Playgroup each week across South Australia.

Playgroup SA presents at

Early Childhood Australia Conference

Playgroup SA was proud to present at this year's Early Childhood Australia National Conference, This is Childhood - Pedagogy and practice in the early years. Held on the 5-8 October 2016 at the Darwin Convention Centre, the conference celebrated the capability, strengths and joy of children and childhood in Australia now.

Playgroup SA Executive Officer, Carley Jones and Support and Development Officer, Melanie Baker were the presenters at the event.

Playgroup SA’s presentation - titled Creating stronger communities through the use of Playgroup, outlined a specific Playgroup SA model delivered through a Supported Playgroup for ages 0-5 years, which was highly successful in creating a strong, vibrant, inclusive and culturally diverse community. The target group for the model were vulnerable and at risk culturally and linguistically diverse families (CALD). Through a partnership between Playgroup SA and St Bridgids Catholic School with funding support from the Department of Social Services (formerly FaHCSIA), the Playgroup contributed to significant positive outcomes for vulnerable children and families in their local community.

The presentation highlighted the key steps taken to plan, develop and deliver the Supported Playgroup Model, which created and nurtured a diverse community as it built capacity to:
  • Improve social, emotional and educational outcomes for children
  • Create a culture of social acceptance and respect, sharing of cultures and increasing a sense of belonging for children and their families within the community
  • Role model strong partnerships and benefits of working together to support outcomes
  • Strengthen community participation through sharing of food, meals, language and culture
  • Promote community engagement as a way to increase connections with education and child development activities
  • Access other services and resources for families who are socially isolated and/or vulnerable
Outcomes which the Playgroup strived to achieve:
  • Creation of a stronger community who continue to meet and support one another post-program
  • Approximately 50 families attended, the majority were from CALD backgrounds
  • Increased parent participation in Parent’s and Friends Committee at the school
  • Strong developmental outcomes for children aged 0-5 years through the program developed by Playgroup SA and delivered through the school-based Playgroup
  • Significant social outcomes for children and families, decreased isolation, increase community participation, socially isolated and vulnerable families engaged
Melanie and Carley were able to share our service experiences with other service providers from early childhood organisations from all across Australia. The presentation also provided a great opportunity for Playgroup SA to showcase the diverse nature of Playgroup, and the benefits for families attending Playgroup.

Twilight Playgroup

Playgroup SA supporting Children's Week

Thank you to every one who joined us in celebrating this year's Children's Week at our Twilight Playgroup event. It was great to see so many happy faces enjoying the craft, activities, story time and a delicious sausage sizzle.

Children's Week is an annual event celebrated in Australia each October. Children's Week celebrates the right of children to enjoy childhood and provides children with the opportunity to demonstrate their talents, skills and abilities.

Each year, a diverse range of events and activities are organised at National, State and Local levels and Playgroup SA is always proud to run our own special event in support of Children's Week.

Playgroup at the Zoo

The fun that was...

Thank you to every one who joined us at this year's Playgroup at the Zoo event, held on Friday 21 October. The day was a huge success with hundreds of children and parents/carers enjoying the Playgroup activities, entertainment and zoo animals at the Adelaide Zoo. It was a truly magical day filled with fun, laughter, play and learning.

For those of you who couldn't make it to this year's event, here is a quick rundown of what happened on the day...

Over 600 parents and children obtained tickets to attend the event and although the weather was a little unpredictable it was great to see so many attend on the day. The fun began as soon as our guests entered through the main gates, with Mr Oopy and his magical bubbles ready to entertain the children, before making their way down to the Rotunda where Playgroup SA Ambassador, Kate Collins officially opened the event. Our children's entertainers provided lots of fun and laughter with Mr Oopy and his energetic show and the Nylon Zoo with their interactive story telling in their giant Panda tent. The children dressed up and paraded around the gardens in brightly coloured animal costumes, complete with amazing animals painted on their faces by Mad Hatterz Face painters. Then it was time for Sensory play, craft, baby play and smiling for the camera in the dress up photo booth and of course, visiting all the animals at the Adelaide Zoo. There was so much to do before a lot of tired children headed home for some well deserved rest.

So thank you everyone for attending this year's Playgroup at the Zoo event - we look forward to seeing you all again next year.

Riverland Outdoor Playgroup

Free Outdoor Event
We finally made it to the Riverland!
After having to reschedule the event in October due tot he unexpected stormy weather we experienced in South Australia, it was great to see so many parents/carers and children attend our Free Outdoor Playgroup event.

We had a fantastic day, filled with fun, laughter and learning. It was such a pleasure to see so many children enjoying getting dirty with Messy Play, building with boxes in Box City, screaming in delight watching the Erupting Volcanoes, creating bright and colourful pieces of art and craft and cooking delicious mud pies in the Mud Kitchen.

Thank you to Berri Football Club for allowing use to utilise the premises and providing a delicious sausage sizzle. And thank you to all the parents and carers for bringing the children along to experience Playgroup.
