What is the Value of your Health?

Covid-19 fostered our telemonitoring pilot

The value of Show me my Heart, our follow-up system in the Cardiothoracic Surgery department at Hospital de Santa Marta, is now more evident than ever. We are supporting patient safety at home. During this trimester, we followed 15 patients in two 1-month length rounds. We are measuring their outcomes and this service's costs, and preparing the platform for the next round!

Telemonitoring Covid-19 symptoms

We adapted BEATNIK, our platform and chatbot, to customize patients' follow-up and support remote monitoring of Covid-19 at home, allowing:
  • Easy configuration to add patients to a clinical team and collect PROMs;
  • Delivery of customized or automatic messages from clinical teams  to patients through a chatbot on the mobile phone;
  • Data access and monitoring by clinical teams in a computer or smartphone.

ACTIVAGE: first patient in home care service

In less than 3 months, CUFIoT4AHA consortium (Lisbon Deployment Site) strived to start the pilot. Our telehealth solution was, finally, tested with the first patient! Nurses were able to follow his recovery from the comfort of his home. Patient safety, close-monitoring and informed decision making are the main drivers for the next step: scale the service to 50 patients!

Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis during Covid-19

On the 21st June, World Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) Day, Associação Portuguesa de Esclerose Lateral Amiotrófica (APELA) organized a conference "Living with ALS in times of Covid-19: risks and uncertainties". Ana Rita Londral, our CEO, moderated a panel composed by social and healthcare workers, engineers, patients and caregivers. The discussion focused on quality and access to healthcare by ALS patients during Covid-19 pandemic, emphasizing the emergent need of teleconsultation and telemonitoring solutions.

TDABC at CUF Descobertas and CUF Santarém

Our time-driven activity-based costing (TDABC) comparative study achieved its intermediate results. After in loco observations and semi-structured interviews, operations' duration of each Knee Osteoarthritis care chain was measured, and involved resources were assessed. We are ready to compute total costs and deliver the final cost analysis tool!

Results will be presented at the ICHOM Conference 2020!
Owing to Covid travel restrictions, the annual ICHOM Conference was postponed to 16-18 November 2020, where our TDABC case study will be presented. Check the agenda here.

Three new Value Center articles

During this atypical trimester, driven by the challenges and opportunities raised by Covid-19 pandemic, our Value Center research focused on how to improve Healthcare systems through health literacy and digital solutions:

HomeSafe: a FCT NOVA project under the program BehindCovid19

We are collaborating with NOVA FCT to supervise a group of Engineering students, who joined together with the purpose of developing a monitoring solution for the elderly who are not familiar with IT.
  • A mobile app and wearable sensors are being developed and integrated;
  • Usability tests with a group of elderly were already taken;
  • Wearable pieces are being designed to be 3D printed.
Professor Cláudia Quaresma is leading the group with the support of Ana Rita Londral, our CEO, and Pedro Dias, our Software Engineer. PLUX Wireless Biosignals is supporting the project by supplying two Bitalino+ sensors.

Flávio Martins won ECIR 2020's Best Demo Award

Flávio Martins, our Head of Data Science, was awarded at the European Conference on Information Retrieval (ECIR) 2020 for "Revisionista.PT: Uncovering the News Cycle using Web Archives"! Revisionista.PT is an online tool that reveals post-publication changes in Portuguese online newspaper articles. More recently, Coronavirus-related articles were incorporated.
