The study analyses costs in the care delivery value chain for knee osteoarthritis surgery. It proposes the TDABC methodology to associate the cost element to the outcomes collected from the application of ICHOM standard set for Hip and Knee Osteoarthritis.
This research suggests a framework that supports CUF creating value to their patients. More info on the project here.
EasyHealth4Covid: New Milestones!
To help fighting Covid-19 pandemic, we have been working in the project Easy Health for Covid! We are currently testing the user interface and design to ensure that our digital platform is adjusted to the targeted audience.
Our partners, Future Healthcare, Healthy Systems and PLUX, are supporting us to develop a digital health solution to enable a fast interaction between high-risk of Covid-19 infection citizens and healthcare providers, in articulation with the social care.
Pilot implementation at a nursing home is about to start, where patients and professionals will be engaged to use a telecare service. Stay tuned! 👀
At the Cardiothoracic Surgery Service of Hospital de Santa Marta - CHULC, we have helped tackling pandemic limitations with a telemonitoring service that supports clinicians in the follow-up of cardiothoracic surgery patients after hospital discharge. We are now leveraging our telemonitoring pilot to include intelligent and adaptable digital tools, in the scope of CardioFollow.AI project.
Through a close collaboration with the clinical team,we are improving BEATNIK, our telemonitoring web platform, to adapt it to healthcare providers' needs. AI-based modules are being included to enable longitudinal risk prediction and early detection of complications, throughout the follow-up process. Five patients are already being monitored.
CardioFollow.AI is supporting personalizedhealthcare, according to patients and their own needs, as well as customizedhealth data collection, processing and representation for clinicians, enabling them to take better decisions about their telemonitored patients.

We were at NOVATalks!
On the 11th February, we were invited by NOVATalks to share our experience on the topic of “The Future of Health”.
NOVATalks is a student initiative, founded on April 2016 at NOVA FCT, with the objective to motivate all of the academic community to expand their knowledge in science, technology, innovation and sustainability domains.
Ana Rita Londral, our CEO, conducted VOH.CoLAB's talk, which touched upon the actual state of innovation in healthcare, and also where we might be heading. The session was recorded and you can watch here!
Python workshops promoted by VOH.CoLAB
Miguel Cardoso and Simão Gonçalves, our Research Engineer Fellows, conducted two external workshops on the basics of Python scripting language, and its potential application in the healthcare sector.
Similarly, VOH.CoLAB has also started an internal training in Python to leverage the digital and analytical skills of our collaborators!
Meet our two fellows for EasyHealth4Covid
In the beginning of March, we welcomed Inês Cerqueira and Ricardo Ferreira into our team! They well support us in EasyHealth4Covid, R&D project in the scope of Covid-19, until July. Get to know them and their role inside the project:
Inês Cerqueira is a Biomedical Engineer graduated by University of Minho. Since 2016 she has been working in User Experience. In the project, she is supporting the development of the digital health tool, optimizing user experience to create a product that users truly value and use: both the Covid-19 patient (user at the nursing home) and the provider (user at the hospital).
Ricardo Ferreira is a Web Developer, graduated by EDIT – Disruptive Digital Education. In the project, Ricardo is providing support in the development of a new mHealth Progressive Web App. He is helping build cross-platform user interfaces to enable the collection of health outcomes following HL7 FHIR standards on all mobile platforms.
Great news are coming: results from a NOVA FCT internship
Driven by the aspiration to deliver evidence-based information to the population and to give a voice to citizens, Matilde Santos and Matilde Faial joined our team for a 1-month internship!
They are both BSc students of Biomedical Engineering at NOVA FCT and enthusiasts about research in Health Literacy. Hence, they collaborated in the design and creation of a digital health literacy platform that targets not only patients, carers and providers, but also the general public, i.e. those interested in better understanding the concepts of health through their terminology.
Listening, understanding, informing, empowering and educating in Health, paving the way for Patient Engagement and Citizen Empowerment, are among the purposes of this platform.
We are working on it so stay tuned for more news about this disruptive project in the area of Health Literacy!
