SMART to Proceed with More Robust Bike Parking Strategy
As you may recall, this past fall SMART released its SMART Station Bicycle Parking Investment Plan, a plan that forecasted bicycle parking demand in order to determine how much and what types of bicycle parking to install at each station. The plan’s baseline bicycle parking recommendations called for a combination of bike racks and electronic bicycle lockers at every station. However, to SCBC’s and others’ disappointment, despite the bike parking recommendations laid out in the Plan, only five bike racks were planned to be installed at each station by the start of passenger service. Great Time Had at Annual Membership Party
Thank you to everyone who joined us on January 13th for our Annual Membership Party and Board Member Election! A great time was had by all as we socialized, enjoyed a beverage or two, and feasted on delicious homemade chili, corn muffins and salad. The entire meal was generously provided by former Executive Director and newest volunteer extraordinaire, Gary Helfrich, and his partner Karen Donaghy (thank you!). We would like to thank everyone who volunteered at the event and helped to make it such a great success. [Read More..]

SRTS Bike Rodeos serve over 1,030 4th graders this Oct.-Nov.
Between October 3rd and November 10th, our Safe Routes to School staff educated over 1,030 students at 14 schools in Santa Rosa, Petaluma, Windsor and Rohnert Park, via our 4th grade Bicycle Rodeo Program. The program consists of an on-bicycle PE class where students learn the basics of bicycling while rotating through four skill-drill courses with direct instruction and encouragement from our SRTS instructors. Low cost helmets, helmet fittings, and bike safety inspections/minor repairs are also provided.
A huge shout out to our partners at Mike’s Bikes, who not only provided bike safety inspections and adjustments to over 480 bicycles, but also produced a fabulous video highlighting our school Bike Rodeo program! [Read More & Watch Video..]

Active Transportation Program Slated to Receive Additional $100M/Year
On January 10th, Governor Brown released his 2017-18 State Budget proposal, which includes $4 billion in new annual investment for transportation to repair roads and help Californians travel more efficiently and sustainably. While the majority of the new revenue will be directed towards maintaining state highways and local roads, this proposal does provide meaningful increases to a variety of other road, transit, and active transportation programs that will help put California on a path toward meeting state climate and equity goals. The new revenue will be raised from a combination of gas and diesel taxes, vehicle license fees, and state climate investments from the possible extension of the Cap-and-Trade Program. [Read More..]

Petaluma Boulevard South Road Diet One Step Closer to Reality
On December 19th, the Petaluma City Council directed staff to apply for One Bay Area Grant-Round 2 (OBAG2) funding for the Petaluma Boulevard South Road Diet. The Council was given three possible projects to consider and prioritize for applying for OBAG2 funding and the Road Diet ranked as their number one priority project! SCBC attended the meeting and spoke in favor of the project, alongside several other project supporters who packed the Council Chambers.
SCBC has been closely coordinating with a group of local Petaluma bike/pedestrian advocates and members of the Petaluma Pedestrian and Bicycle Advisory Committee (PBAC) to urge the City to prioritize and apply for OBAG2 funding for this important safety enhancement which has been long sought by members of the local community.
