The Sonoma County Bicycle Coalition wishes to express our sadness over the death of cyclist, Amy Suyama, who passed away this past Saturday after a crash involving a vehicle on Eastside Road while riding the Tour de Fuzz. Our hearts and condolences go out to Amy's loved ones and the entire cycling community over this tragic loss.
We would also like to acknowledge concerns that have been raised about the way the police respond to bike-related cases. We recognize that the investigation of Amy's death is still underway, and we rely on law enforcement to investigate incidents thoroughly and to prosecute as warranted.
SCBC is already in communication and in the process of setting up meetings with the California Highway Patrol and other law enforcement and stakeholders to discuss this specific investigation, as well as to gain overall clarity on the protocol on investigating vehicle collisions involving people biking and walking. We are also seeking clarity on how the California Vehicle Code is interpreted and enforced by law enforcement with regards to cyclists. Additionally, we will be looking at ways we can work collectively to help increase safety and awareness of cyclists on our roadways.
We understand that this process will take some time, but SCBC will be aggressively working with law enforcement, the District Attorney and others to ensure transparency and a fair process. Our ultimate goal is to not only help ensure that justice is served in this instance, but to also take steps now to help prevent tragedies like this from occurring again.
A ride of silence will be planned over the coming weeks to pay respect to Amy. We will be providing more details on the ride as they become available.
Sincerely,

Alisha O'Loughlin
