Public Utilities Commission Approves Jennings Avenue Crossing of SMART Track!

SCBC is thrilled to report that on September 15th, the City of Santa Rosa won approval from the state Public Utilities Commission (PUC) to build a bicycle and pedestrian crossing of the SMART track at Jennings Avenue!

The decision is the result of a four-year effort by the city, local residents, SCBC and other local advocates to preserve the informal crossing near Coddington Mall which had been used for decades until a temporary barrier was erected in November of 2015 to prevent people from crossing the rail line during Sonoma Marin Area Rail Transit (SMART) commuter rail testing and future operations.

Investigation of Amy Suyama’s Death Still Underway

SCBC continues to mourn the loss of Amy Suyama as we work to learn more about the status of the investigation and ways in which we can help prevent future such tragedies from occurring.

SCBC has learned that the investigation of Amy’s death is currently in the hands of the California Highway Patrol (CHP) and has not yet made it to the District Attorney’s (DA) Office. The unfortunate string of recent fatalities on Sonoma County’s roadways has left the CHP’s investigation unit very busy. Therefore, we must continue to be patient as the investigation is being completed.

Road  Construction: Use Caution at Hwy 12 Laguna De Santa Rosa Bridge

SCBC would like to remind cyclists and motorists to travel with caution through the Laguna De Santa Rosa Bridge construction site on State Highway 12 near Sebastopol as Caltrans continues construction of the new bridge.

The old bridge is being replaced after years of scouring at its base from the Laguna De Santa Rosa Creek. It will remain open during construction, tentatively scheduled to be completed in late 2016. When bridge construction is complete, new shoulders and sidewalks will be accessible to bicyclists and pedestrians. However, the bridge is temporarily without shoulders or sidewalks.
