Safe Routes to School Bicycle Safety/Skill Education
Independent Contractor – SEASONAL POSITION


The Sonoma County Bicycle Coalition seeks an enthusiastic, education contractor to teach bicycle safety & skills at local schools. This is a seasonal, contractual position that will take place at a variety of locations throughout Sonoma County primarily in May 2015 (dates listed below), with a possibility of continued seasonal work in Fall 2015, Spring 2016 and beyond.
The SCBC Safe Routes to Schools (SRTS) program works to create safe, convenient, and fun opportunities for children to walk &bicycle, and take transit to and from schools. The program has been designed to reverse the decline in children walking and bicycling to schools. Benefits include reduced traffic and pollution and improved health and safety.
 
Key Responsibilities
 

  1. Assisting with transport & set up of on-bicycle course(s) for students (aka “Bicycle-Skill Safety Rodeos”) and at community events
  2. Providing on-bicycle instruction, skill support, and supervision of children, primarily at 4th grade Bicycle Skill-Safety Rodeos, but also at community-based events with children of varying ages.
  3. On-road riding supervision, instruction, and skill support
  4. Basic bicycle maintenance, bike fittings, and helmet fittings
  5. Assistance as needed with other SRTS-related education outreach duties (i.e. outreach at events, adult instruction, etc)
 
Required Qualifications
  1. Availability for scheduled events (listed below), during school hours (approximately 7am-4pm), and occasionally after school/weekends.  
  2. Experience with and love of working with children, outdoor education teaching experience &/or strong field/kid management skills highly desired
  3. Love of bicycling and experience and comfort with cycling for transportation.
  4. Enthusiastic, energetic, team player attitude.
  5. Strong communication, reliability, and follow through
  6. Able to lift at least 50 lbs and chalk out a course on a blacktop
  7. Clear background check (fingerprinting required)
  8. Attendance at an SCBC Street Skills for Cyclist Class (may be fulfilled within 60 days of being hired if other qualifications are met)
  9. Ability to travel throughout Sonoma County.
  10. Clean driving record & proof of insurance (if required to drive)
 
Desired Qualifications
  1. Bilingual (English/Spanish)
  2. Strong experience with bicycle maintenance.
  3. Strong belief in the ability to positively change lives by supporting walking and bicycling for transportation.
  4. Access to a truck is a plus, although not a requirement.

Rate: Each Bike Rodeo event listed above is compensated at a flat contract rate of $136.00. Contract will be for a minimum of 10 of the above 16 events. Additional contract tasks, if needed, outside of the Bike Rodeo event dates listed above are compensated at a rate of $17/hr.
