Hermetica, Pigment, mineral, human ash, fire, on panel, 84x84", 2014

The Peninsula Museum of Art is proud to present

Tobias Tovera

January 5 - March 16, 2014

Closing Reception: Sunday March 16th, 2014, 1PM- 4PM

Mixed Media Paintings by Tobias Tovera at the Peninsula Museum of Art
Presently exhibiting a recent installment of his Permutations on Iron series at the Peninsula Museum of Art, Tobias Tovera furthers his study of, and engagement with, “alchemical processes in the pursuit of discovering a ‘third space,’ a zone of possibility that exists beyond restrictive dualities” by way of his exhibit, “Hermetica.”  Converging atop Tovera’s shifting, cosmic élan that dwells somewhere between far-out galactic isolation and an ever-blooming interior vitalisme, “Hermetica” invites the spectator to enter into complex sensations in constant movement: strains of life connected to ‘us’ inasmuch as they emerge from the depths.  For “Hermetica,” ‘the depths’ serve as a starting point that ushers in “primordial formations of living matter and the ways life may have begun in the genesis” through a morphing deluge of micro/macro multiplicity.
With the inclusion of 5 new works, Permutations on Iron reaches new levels of experimentation that propels the narrative of the series into unexplored regions of study having to do with mutation, alchemy, and ‘the cosmic’ vis-à-vis the human body – or the spaces of transformation that spawn when a human body becomes enveloped by other ‘bodies’ – celestial, primordial, elemental.  Through the implementation of experimental materials (solvents, minerals, pigments, ash) and gallery mise-en-scène (paintings tilted on the ground opposed to traditional eye-level wall-hangings), Tovera imbricates the spectator’s body, prompting him/her to move between spaces bisected by horizontal, vertical, and diagonal viewing positions in the midst of sentinel-like nebulae resembling embryonic cellular organisms.  His performance installation “Hermetica” furthers his use of the body by positioning it “as an integral element […] that captures a physical and psychic topography” bubbling in the interim of ‘the bodies’ of the painting-in-process, the performer, and the spectators.
The exhibition will run till March 16th at the Peninsula Museum of Art with the closing reception on March 16th. Tovera will perform every Wednesday at 4PM until the close of the exhibition adding new layers to the in-process installation.

Studio Journal KNOCK

Issue 2 - California

My studio was recently featured in the second edition of Studio Journal Knock, a brilliant international book published in Japan and edited by Isao Nishiyama. It was beautiful to meet Isao on his journey as he travels to visit art studios from around the globe. The Journal visited my studio over the summer and captured some amazing images along with an interview and review of my work.

NBC Presents

Tobias Tovera | Paintings
Premieres March 23rd 2014 | Sundays 8/7c

Coming soon to NBC!  I am working with the producers of American Dream Builders to have paintings from my Diffusions of Pigment series filmed as part of the show. Tune in to America's Dream Builders: where top designers, builders, architects and landscapers go head-to-head each week, putting their talents to the test on extreme home renovations. They’ll tackle spaces that are architecturally diverse, resulting in epic transformations with impeccable design. These incredible transformations will be judged by host Nate Berkus and a panel of experts to determine which team achieved the best results. The losing team will then be forced to send one team member home. In the live finale, the two remaining competitors will each design and renovate a home on their own, bringing their unique visions to life. America will then vote and crown one contestant the winner. Finally, the two spectacular homes will be given away to two lucky viewers!

Nate Berkus, Craig Plestis and Tom Shelly serve as executive producers. "American Dream Builders" is a production of Universal Television.

Tobias Tovera + Abbey Glass

Collaborative Collection

It's been beautiful to work with Abbey. We had our first exhibit at 111 Minna Gallery this last summer, received sponsorship by Supima Cotton for us to complete a hand painted dress shown at New York Fashion week, and we recently exhibited at the High Art Museum of Atlanta. For spring/summer we are looking at new textiles and innovative hand dying techniques for a bold new 2014 collection.
