Nova Members Survey 2018
The Nova Members Survey 2018 is live! We would like to take this opportunity to ask Nova Members questions about their organisations, what they think about Nova, and any suggestions Members may have on how we can improve. The feedback we receive helps us improve and shape our offer. All of the questions in the survey are optional and it won't take any longer than 10 minutes to complete. The deadline for responses is 31 October 2018.
Nova 2018 AGM - Save the date!
Nova is holding the 2018 AGM and 'Big Conversation' on Social Prescribing on 26 October 2018, at Unity Hall, Wakefield. This event will celebrate and share current good practice and success stories on social prescribing projects that have a positive impact on the health and wellbeing of people in Wakefield District. Paula Sheriff, Shadow Minister, Health and MP for Dewsbury, Mirfield, Denby Dale & Kirkburton will be delivering the guest speech. Paula will be talking about the Shadow Government's view on social solutions to health and wellbeing, and its impact on the mental health of the population. Consultations regarding the UK’s obligations under the UN Convention against Torture
REDRESS is coordinating and facilitating a joint civil society shadow report to the Committee against Torture to provide an alternative, fact-based view of the measures taken by the UK to implement its obligations under the Convention against Torture. They will be holding in-person consultation events for civil society organisations across England and Wales as well as a call for written evidence throughout October 2018. REDRESS is looking for input from organisations working on the following areas:

The Well Women Centre has published a new programme of workshops for over October. These are free to women who live within the Wakefield area. If you work with, or know of women who will benefit from attending any of these workshops, please pass this flyer (pdf) on to them.
Well Women Centre - new programme of workshops
The Police and Crime Commissioner and Chief Constable are seeking to appoint three new independent members for the Joint Independent Audit and Ethics Committee. The positions are for up to 11 days work per year and may be of interest to those with a background in ethics, integrity, risk or financial controls and who live or work in West Yorkshire. Money Smart is a free Council service to help people become smarter at managing their money and making the most of their income. For more information, please see the flyer (pdf).
Crafting4Good would like community groups to complete their survey about the services that they provide. Responses are needed in order to show funders evidence of need, as well as design a useful service for local community groups. If you would like to take part in the survey, please complete this Google Form.

FSI Northern Fundraising Conference

Let's Talk Good Finance Event

In Partnership with Big Society Capital, Social Enterprise Yorkshire and Humber are pleased to host a Let's Talk Good Finance event. This session is designed to offer third sector organisations the following opportunities:
Introduction to Social Change and Campaigning Workshop
- To speak to charity and social enterprise leaders who have already accessed social investment
- To meet potential social investors
- To learn about new social investment initiatives, funds and instruments
- To be able to ask questions in a safe and non-judgemental space
- To understand more about when social investment is not suitable or appropriate

The Sheila McKechnie Foundation is running a workshop focused on Social Change and Campaigning. It is designed for those interested in social change and change making. It is for people new to campaigns or who have found themselves campaigning by accident and who want to know more. Participants will improve their understanding, skills and knowledge of change making, including understanding more about how change happens and be more effective at developing a campaign strategy. The workshop will also provide participants with the opportunity to meet other campaigners, develop their professional network and receive peer support.
Family Fun Day

Hopeful Families and Young Lives Consortium have jointly organised a Family Fun Day, which is taking place over the October half term. There will be lots of information on what is available to support families, and workshops to help families plan their futures. Also, there will be a range of activities and workshops for children and young people. Please see the flyer for more information.
Hopeful Families offers opportunities to build hope, confidence and skills for people who are not in work. It is funded by the European Social Fund and the National Lottery, through the Big Lottery Fund.
Governance Masterclass - Good Governance

Nova is running a Governance Masterclass programme aimed at trustees, directors and management committee members of local charities and community organisations. The Good Governance session will provide a solid underpinning for new trustees and for experienced board members who need a refresh on their understanding of their strategic leadership and governance of the organisation they are on the board/committee of. This session will be delivered by Ian Cockerill, Nova Chief Executive Officer.

Wakefield Warm Homes Fund
Closing date: The funding is available for a limited time and will be given to those who apply first.
The Warm Homes Fund provides gas central heating to help people save energy and stay warm in their homes. A full gas central heating system with an A rated combi boiler is available completely free* of charge to tenants and owner occupiers**, as long as the criteria is met. All of the work is done through Wakefield Council’s approved contractors through the Better Homes Yorkshire scheme. If there is no gas installed Wakefield Council can also arrange gas connections free* of charge, as long as the property is close to the gas main. * Subject to eligibility criteria and proximity to gas main. ** A heavily discounted landlord contribution is required for private rented properties
Energy Industry Voluntary Redress Scheme
Closing date: 16 November 2018
Energy Saving Trust has developed an open application process for charities seeking funding from the Energy Redress Scheme. Energy Saving Trust has been appointed by Ofgem to distribute payments from energy companies who may have breached rules. The funds can pay for anything from making a home more energy efficient, to providing advice that helps consumers keep on top of their bills. Projects should be of benefit to people in England, Scotland and Wales.
Live Well Wakefield Small Grants - Round 4
Closing date: 2 November 2018
The fourth round of the Live Well Wakefield Small Grants Fund is now open. In this round, we would welcome applications which address the needs identified below, however, all applications will be considered if they meet the criteria of this grant fund:
- Support for people with dementia and their carers
- Support for people living with Long Term Conditions
- Support for lone parents accessing education
- Support for people who are lonely – reducing isolation
- Support for people with low level Mental Health issues
- Support for people to develop life skills
In the previous rounds we have funded a number of gardening/allotment based projects, at this time we will not be accepting applications for this type of project.
HLF Small Grants Programme
Closing date: 18 January 2018
The Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) is encouraging groups across Yorkshire and the Humber to delve into their heritage to discover the knowledge, fun, skills, and benefits HLF funding can unlock. HLF are offering grants of £3,000 to £10,000 to encourage everyone to take advantage of all that heritage has to offer.

WYCAS e-learning programme
10 September - 7 December 2018
The WYCAS award winning, accredited e-learning course Financial Practice and Procedures is now taking bookings. The course fee is £500 and will require 30 hours of student learning time. You can access the course remotely from your computer to allow you to learn from the materials and submit assessments in your own time.

Live Well Wakefield Workshops

There are several workshops that Live Well Wakefield are facilitating in the coming months at Nova. Each course is free and is provided by your local NHS. The workshops do not interfere with any treatment you are currently receiving as it compliments other healthcare programmes.
