     Voice of Afghan Youth

Introducing our new PARSA produced radio and television series, aimed at providing the children of Afghanistan a platform to be heard. Their thoughts and their dreams in their own voices as they begin take charge in shaping the future of Afghanistan.

PARSA's Afghan Scouts have been doing incredible work for over five years. Such effective work (and play) in fact, that it only made sense to share their stories with all the children of Afghanistan. PARSA hired an internal Production staff and a media subcontractor to do the filming. With that, the VoAY project was born. With input and support from the Scouts team, Parsa management and their own research, the team began to develop programming that followed what the  children of Afghanistan do, who they are and what they have to say.
So what's the show about?

VoAY works with a few guidelines for each episode. First, each episode is in a different province. We feel strongly that Afghan youth will benefit from learning about each other within the backdrop of the many unique cultures and ways of living. How children live in Jalalabad in the East for example, is so different from how children live in Bamyan or Herat. We love that each community represents different customs, foods, scenery and even accents.

Then we look for stories under the guideline of YESTERDAY,TODAY and TOMORROW.

Yesterday means learning about our history through places, personal stories and legends. For example, in Bamyan we had an elder give a tour to a few children of the ancient Shar Zuhak. He told the kids the history and shared his personal memories too.
Today means sharing what our lives look like. Each episode features the daily life of one or more children, in their own words. We also learn from the kids what they love about their current communities. it was a park in Mazaar and it was a special food in Parwan. There are so many unique characteristics to each province and we love being introduced to them.
Tomorrow means what our goals and dreams are for the future. We ask children everywhere we go, what they hope to see in the future of Afghanistan.

An important segment in every episode is a community service lead by the children. This includes things like cleaning the streets, visiting injured police officers in the hospital and supporting those less fortunate in their work. These children remind us that civic engagement is everyones responsibility at any age, regardless of how privileged or marginalized a life they lead.

We also share songs, jokes, stories, and anything else that comes along. It's so hard to predict what the kids will say or do.. so we don't. We go in with our guideline and give all their voices a chance.

Where will it broadcast?

Our first priority is to have the TV and radio series air on the provincial television and radio stations. Its important for us to share these stories with the communities who provided them. We're excited for them to see their peers, children from all over the country, and themselves! Budget permitting, we'd like to air these programs as much as possible and reach as far as possible. We hope we gather enough support to share these stories all over Afghanistan and even outside of the country.
What can I do to support Voice of Afghan Youth? And can I see the show?!

For now, please watch the show! We've subtitled two of our episodes and would love your feedback. What catches your eye? What do like about it? What suggestions for change do you have as we continue to film?  If people come to mind that you think would love to see and/or support our initiative, please share with them.
And if you can, try to watch the program as if you're a child in rural Afghanistan.
