LAST CHANCE

 
Our exhibitions 'Only a Free Individual Can Create a Free Society' a major new film installation by Grace Schwindt and 'Pleasure Devotion, Balance' a group show curated by Mexico Project Space close this weekend. Both shows will be open late, until 8.30pm, for Digbeth First Friday and from 12–5pm on Saturday so catch them while you can.

DETOX
DIGBETH FIRST FRIDAY
Friday 1 August, 6.30–8.30

As part of August's Digbeth First Friday artist collective Mexico invites you to plan for the future and detox with CHAi-t, Dena Yago, Aaron McLaughlin and Conway + Young. Fresh smoothies will be available for the evening, served by Mexico in our Black Pleasure bar.

First Friday sees Digbeth come alive with art, music, street food and performance.

FAMILY WORKSHOP
EXPLORING COSTUME: BODY ALTERING OUTFITS
Saturday 2 August, 10.30am–12pm
 
Come along to this family workshop and explore the links between costume, movement and dance. Drawing inspiration from our current exhibition by Grace Schwindt, families will work together to create body altering costumes that affect the way we move and feel.

The workshop is free and suitable for children aged 5-11. Children must be accompanied by an adult. Booking is essential - to book a place pop into the gallery or email james@eastsideprojects.org.

ESP FILM SHOWREEL

Thursday 14 August, 6.30–8pm
Free

Join us to watch a selection of new video work by eleven artists on the ‘big screen’ in the gallery. Wide ranging in subject matter, tone and length the showreel includes digital animation, assemblage, found footage and film and was selected by artist Benedict Drew and ESP Programmer Elinor Morgan from an open call to ESP members.

In August ESP members will visit a seminar on casting in architecture at Grymsdyke Farm, a research facility and architectural workshop in Buckinghamshire. 

At the third  annual Summer camp we will be collaboratively developing and presenting new work at Eastside Projects over three days, having our questions answered at a creative surgery and rounding off the week sampling each other’s culinary skills at a potluck feast.

DIGBETH FIRST FRIDAY: AWAY FROM ALL SUNS
Friday 5 September, 7–9pm

During September’s Digbeth First Friday experimental music project Giant Axe Field take over the gallery to perform a live and improvised audio visual reworking of Jindřich Polák’s pioneering 1963 film Ikarie XB 1.

Adapted from Stanisław Lem’s 1955 novel The Magellanic Cloud, the film is considered an influential template of contemporary sci-fi screen narratives. Giant Axe Field is an experimental music project by Sean O’Keeffe and Simon Bailey.

NEW EXHIBITIONS: PUBLIC PREVIEW
Friday 19 September, 6–8pm

Join us as we launch two new exhibitions. In the main gallery Turner Prize winning artist Susan Philipsz makes a new site specific work, filling the gallery - which is housed in a building built in 1918 - with the sounds of instruments damaged in World War I. 

In the second gallery we present an exhibition of new paintings by Sandwell based Polish artist Rafal Zar who was awarded the 2014 ESP Members Show.

Both exhibitions continue to 6 December.
