May 30, 2013, New York: Today, Icarus Films announced its acquisition of all North American distribution rights to THE GREAT FLOOD, the new film by director Bill Morrison (DECASIA, THE MINERS' HYMNS). The film features an original soundtrack by the Grammy-winning guitarist/composer Bill Frisell.

The Great FloodThe Mississippi River Flood of 1927 was the most destructive river flood in American history. The river overflowed its banks in 145 places, inundating 27,000 square miles in water up to 30 feet deepMusically, the “Great Migration” of rural southern blacks to Northern cities saw the Delta Blues electrified and reinterpreted as the Chicago Blues, Rhythm and Blues, and Rock and Roll.

Made with rare archival footage sourced and woven together by Mr. Morrison, much of it on  volatile nitrate stock and, in many cases, not seen since it was first photographed, THE GREAT FLOOD is a stunning high-definition portrait of life during the flood.

Bill Morrison, "one of the most adventurous American filmmakers" (Variety) works unusually closely with his films' composers, including Michael Gordon, the composer for DECASIA as well as other of Morrison's films, and Jóhann Jóhannsson, whose score for THE MINERS' HYMNS (2011) was named Best Movie Score of the Year by Alex Ross of The New Yorker. This is the third time that he has collaborated with Mr. Frisell (THE FILM OF HER, THE MESMERIST), a musician who The New Yorker described thus: "Bill Frisell plays the guitar like Miles Davis played the trumpet".

The Great FloodFirst performed live accompanying advance screenings of the film at venues including
Carnegie Hall (New York City), Symphony Hall (Chicago), Royce Hall (Los Angeles), and Queen Elizabeth Hall (London), the score for THE GREAT FLOOD features Mr. Frisell on guitar, Ron Miles on trumpet, Tony Scherr on bass, and Kenny Wollesen on drums.

THE GREAT FLOOD will have its theatrical premiere in New York City this winter at
IFC Center. This engagement will be followed by screenings and engagements across the U.S. and Canada.
The North American distribution deal for THE GREAT FLOOD was negotiated by Jonathan Miller, president of Icarus Films, and Adam Davids, representing Hypnotic Pictures. THE GREAT FLOOD is the seventh of Morrison's films that Icarus Films has acquired for distribution in the last two years; the others are LIGHT IS CALLING, THE MINER'S HYMNS, RELEASE, OUTERBOROUGH, THE FILM OF HER, and DECASIA, currently available exclusively on Blu-Ray
“[THE GREAT FLOOD] would be a memorable drama even played in total silence. In closeup, it shows trickling streams and rain on cotton plants swelling into torrents; cigar-toting politicians gesticulate reassuringly, and the wealthy making dignified retreats while the impoverished cling to the remains of shacks. Guitarist Bill Frisell's live soundtrack of howling blues chords, Thelonious Monk hooks, country-swing and Old Man River quotes would make a fine concert without a film, too. Put the two together [and] the result moves up another creative and emotional level.” —The Guardian
