Dear reader,
We couldn’t be happier to welcome you to our second INGENIOUS newsletter. This is a special issue of the DRS Cluster Projects ASSISTANCE, CURSOR, FASTER, INTREPID, PathoCERT, RESPOND-A, RESPONDRONE, Search & Rescue, SIXTHSENSE and INGENIOUS, which are funded by the European Union’s Horizon 2020 Research & Innovation programme under the same topic SU-DRS02-2018-2019-2020 - Technologies for first responders.
Natural and man-made disasters are occurring at an increasing rate over the last decades, harming countries and people across the world to varying degrees. Building resilience is critical to reducing people’s exposure to hazards and improving the authorities' ability to take proper measures and cope with disasters fast and effectively. Technological innovation for disaster-resilient societies presents the opportunity to expedite and magnify the impact of disaster relief operations through greater efficiency and responsiveness; reaching more people, sooner, more cost-effectively, ensuring a high level of protection for first Responders and saving more lives.
The DRS Cluster Projects' efforts are devoted to developing novel technological solutions to enhance the first responders’ capabilities to assess threats, share situational information, plan and respond to disasters effectively and safely. The second INGENIOUS' issue summarises the DRS Cluster Projects’ current activities, presenting their main developments and the next steps planned.
We are glad that we share experiences and knowledge with other experts in the field through this newsletter. If you work for a similar project or relevant R&D initiatives and industry and would like to exchange and circulate ideas on the deployment of EU resilience and safety and security of societies, do not hesitate to get in contact with us through our website https://ingenious-first-responders.eu/, tweet us @INGENIOUS_EU or send us a direct message through LinkedIn @INGENIOUS_EU.
Yours sincerely,
The INGENIOUS team

INGENIOUS aims to assist First Responders to be more effective and save more lives during natural and manmade disasters and crises by exploiting novel technologies. The INGENIOUS Next Generation Integrated Toolkit (NGIT) for Collaborative Response is provided at the service of the FRs for extensive small and large-scale field tests and validations. During the lifecycle of the project will be held 3 rounds of LITs (Laboratory Integration and Testing sessions), 2 rounds of SSTs (Small Scale Field Tests) and 2 FSXs (Large Scale Field Validation demonstrators/exercises). Until today, the 1st round of LITs for testing the 1st prototype of the INGENIOUS Toolkit has been successfully completed. Currently, the project continues with the 2nd round of the LITs and the 1st round of SSTs which are under preparation.

The CURSOR project will develop a CURSOR Search and Rescue Kit using soft miniaturised robotic equipment, drones, and advanced sensors reducing time for detection and rescue of victims trapped under debris while increasing the personal safety of the SaR teams. Currently, the project is in the middle of the testing cycle. Most of the lab tests have been conducted and the results have been integrated to the development.

First responder Advanced technologies for Safe and efficient Emergency Response (FASTER) aims to help and protect first responders during their operations and enhance their capabilities in terms of situational awareness and communication. FASTER is directing the development of these technologies from design, research and implementation to their integration into a coherent, interconnected, tested and validated toolset that can make a tangible difference to first responders’ efficiency and safety.

INTREPID project aims to help first responders by providing a platform that will improve the 3D exploration and analysis of disaster zones. Thanks to this platform, first responders will be able to immediately start operations without having to wait for specialised teams or for the zone to be fully secured. The first major task very naturally concerned the EUR collection. In parallel, the architecture definition started and is currently in progress. Other tasks that have been conducted include the definition of the field validation methodology.

During emergency response operations, first responders are at risk of being exposed to dangerous pathogens through skin contact, ingestion or inhalation. These pathogens pose a significant risk of illness, disease or even death. PathoCERT will strengthen the capabilities of first responders and agencies, in terms of real-time accurate pathogen detection, increased situational awareness, improved ability in contamination event control and risk mitigation, and joint coordination between agencies to effectively manage these events. During the first 6 months, the project partners have started collecting the requirements for the different technologies. During the next period, the Communities of Practice will be established.

The RESPOND-A project intends to maximise situational awareness of first responders by providing a Clear Operational Picture and the optimal management of operations against disasters of any scale and complexity. RESPOND-A will boost First responders operational capabilities in terms of Early Assessment, Safety Assessment, Risk Mitigation and Crisis Management Capabilities. To achieve this, RESPOND-A will harness the latest available technological innovations in the field including 4G/5G mission critical networks and applications, Augmented Reality technologies, UAVs, drones and robots as well as Smart equipment and wearables. The 1st RESPOND-A training took place on 10-11 December 2020.

ResponDrone is making real progress in achieving its goal of developing and applying a fleet of drones operated by a single pilot in emergency situations, providing critical information and communication services to first responders. The ResponDrone system aims to provide both, the rescue forces on site and the control center, access to the data generated via an app. With this information, it is then possible to request additional personnel or alternatively to dispatch those first responders’ personnel who are not required on site to other locations. Much effort has also been invested by the consortium in gathering end-user requirements included literature research, case studies, interviews, and surveys as well as a design thinking workshop.

~ About INGENIOUS ~
INGENIOUS is a three-year project, funded by the European Union and the Republic of Korea under the Horizon 2020 Research and Innovation Program. This research initiative proposes an integrated, reliable and cost-effective technology solution that ensures a high level of protection and augmented operational capacity, assisting First Responders in saving more lives and being able to return from the disaster scene safe and sound.
More specifically, this research initiative will deliver the innovative Next Generation Integrated Toolkit (NGIT), which consists of advanced technological equipment integrated in the uniform, boots and helmet of the First Responder to facilitate seamless and resilient interconnectivity and boost her/his awareness. The innovative Next Generation Integrated Toolkit (NGIT) integrates robotic, Internet of Things (IoT) and Augmented Reality technologies, for both the First Responder of the future and the accompanying K9 Units. The NGIT will allow First Responders of different disciplines (police, fire service, emergency medical units or civil protection) to combine their strengths and experience, enhancing their common operational picture and increased situational awareness in order to act more safely and effectively together.
