Mark your calendars for these upcoming events
Dear Friends,

Critical Resistance Oakland has been hard at work fighting imprisonment and policing in the Bay Area. As always, we strive to strengthen our movements and get as many people involved as possible to build toward abolition. Check out these exciting upcoming events, some organized by CR and others by our comrades, where you can learn and get involved in some of the ongoing struggles that we’ve been engaged in. Click on the images for more details about each event.

Stop Urban Shield Town Hall

Friday, April 22 // 6p-8p
Eastside Arts Alliance
2277 Int'l Blvd, Oakland

Urban Shield is a weapons expo and war-like police training that brings together law enforcement agencies from across the country and world to learn how to better repress, criminalize, and militarize our communities.
It is a key player in creating militarized emergency response systems that make police the first responders to everything from climate disasters to uprisings. But as we saw during Katrina, when “public safety” relies on armed emergency management, communities of color, and particularly Black communities, become an “emergency” that need to be controlled and managed with a military response.
Join the Stop Urban Shield Coalition to learn about the fight and how to get involved. Space is wheelchair accessible.

Abolition of Policing Workshop

Saturday, April 23 // 11a-1p
1904 Franklin St, Oakland
3rd Floor Conference Room

Want to learn how to work toward abolishing the cops? Want to hear how we challenge the notion that policing keeps us safe? CR Oakland regularly offers this workshop that looks at the role and history of policing in the U.S., the way it has impacted various communities, and how people have resisted and challenged its inherent violence. This workshop also goes over how we can reduce our reliance on policing by highlighting the various ways that building up community strength and practices lead to true safety that does not depend on law enforcement.

The building is wheelchair accessible. Please email croakland@criticalresistance.org to RSVP.

Hugo "Yogi" Pinell Memorial

Saturday, April 23 // 1p-5p
African American Art & Culture Complex
762 Fulton St, SF

Members of The San Quentin 6 - Sundiata Tate, Bato T. and David Johnson - with Brother & Sister Comrades present a memorial for Hugo "Yogi" Pinell. Hugo Pinell and George Jackson organized for racial unity in prison, laying the foundation for the CA prisoners’ August 12, 2012 Agreement to End Hostilities between ethnic groups, which made possible the CA Prisoner Hunger Strike of 2013 by over 30,000 CA prisoners and 100's more nationwide. Hugo was killed on August 12, 2015, but his legacy of resistance will carry on as long as people are fighting for freedom.
All are welcome. Free. Food will be served.
Childcare will be provided. Wheelchair accessible event.
