IR HONORS INFO SESSION

There's a lot going on this week! Come join us on Thursday for the IR Honors Thesis Info Session! It starts at 6.30 p.m. and it is a great opportunity to get all of the details you need about what it's really like to write an Honors Thesis for IR because the whole thing will be a Q&A-format student panel consisting of the current IR Honors thesis students --I will be there too, and trust me, we will be very open and honest with you about the entire experience! Flatbread pizza and Meeting Street cookies will be served. All grade levels are welcome!

Seniors: Two important deadlines for graduation this week.
1. You must notify the registrar TOMORROW about which ceremony you will attend at graduation if you have more than one concentration. 
2. You must revise and submit your final course plan in ASK by MARCH 10.

Can I apply to the Honors Program if I am studying abroad in the spring junior year?

Yes. Students studying abroad during the spring semester may submit an application by email or fax. You are responsible for having your primary thesis advisor send an email to the IR Program, confirming your preparation for the proposed topic and your advisor’s willingness to supervise the project. Primary thesis advisors must have a PhD and be on campus for both semesters of your senior year. All students, whether on the Brown campus or abroad, must meet the application deadline. Applications for the class of 2018 and 2018.5 are due on April 17. Late applications are not accepted. Get details and the application form.

Senior Requirements

Update to your courses in ASK NOW!

1. Click "edit," then update your IR concentration courses. 
All entries should have a green check mark and a grade except for courses you are currently taking (these will have a green circle but no check). Weird highlighting (the latest is orange) can happen with study abroad courses--don't worry about it. The red vertical line indicates which courses are being double-counted with another concentration--the rule is no more than two.

2. Check both the box at the bottom of the course page in ASK that says: "My declaration is complete. Submit for review by department," and the one that says "I am a senior and these are my final revisions prior to graduation."

3. Hit "submit."

Capstone Catalog: Required for graduation

Students who completed a capstone course last fall should submit a capstone catalog entry. This is required for graduation.

IR DUG: Weekly Meetings and Professor Lunches

The IR DUG will be meeting every other week on Wednesdays at 7 p.m. this semester. Make sure you attend these meetings to become more involved in the IR department, meet fellow concentrators, learn about opportunities related to IR, and know about cool events in advance! This semester, the DUG is also organizing professor lunches, a wonderful opportunity for students to spend time with faculty from the Watson Institute, ask questions, have conversations, and enjoy some food together! The first of these will be with Professor Sreemati Mitter on Monday, March 6 from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. at the South Common Room in the Watson Institute --don't miss it!

Lecture: Nature's Present Environment, Society, and Science in Contemporary India

Who: Mahesh Rangarajan, professor History and Environmental Studies at Ashoka University. Rangarajan has a BA in History from the University of Delhi. He has an MA and PhD from Oxford University where he was a Rhodes Scholar.
Sponsor: Center for Contemporary South Asia
Rangarajan's first book, Fencing the Forest was published in 1996. His most recent work is Nature and Nation (2015). He also authored India’s Wildlife History (2001) and co-authored, Towards Coexistence: People, Parks and Wildlife (2000). Two recent co-edited works are Nature Without Borders (2014) and Shifting Ground ( 2014).

Displacement has been a structuring force impacting the work of creative practitioners around the globe throughout the modern period. As a prominent factor shaping forms of subjectivity, power relations of inclusion and exclusion, and institutions of state authority and industrial and creative production, displacement has served as a site of resistance for artists, architects, and other creative practitioners while simultaneously molding the frameworks and institutions through which they seek to engage the world. This fifth seminar in the Displacement and the Making of the Modern World series seeks to bring together creative practitioners from multiple disciplines and mediums to engage with the question of how displacement has guided their work and how their creative practice serves as a sometimes physical impediment to the borders, state powers, political economic relationships, and other forces driving displacement. This seminar will begin by allowing the artists and architects assembled here to introduce their work and subjective relationships to displacement before moving into a discussion of how their work serves as both a locus of resistance and a site of institutional critique. Lecture: The Rise of Populism

Professor Schiller will analyze the first five weeks of the Trump administration and reflect on what it tells us about the differences between campaigning and governing, as well as the nature of checks and balances in the American democracy. Professor Varshney will distinguish between two kinds of populism by drawing examples from different parts of the world: left and right. He will also examine the consequences of populism for global order.

Now in its second year, the Yale NROTC Leadership Conference is the premier leadership conference in the Northeast and seeks to facilitate thought-provoking and energetic dialogue between students, academics, and professionals from both military and civilian backgrounds. This year’s conference will focus on Leadership in Global Affairs, developing leadership and management skills in attendees that can be applied within the context of current political and military affairs at a global level. Gen. Stanley McChrystal, USA (ret.), former Commander of US and ISAF Forces in Afghanistan, and Ali Soufan, the chairman and CEO of the Soufan Group, will be the keynote speakers. Summer Program: Conflict and the Struggle for Peace: Explorations in Ireland and the Middle East

The program begins in Dublin and then moves to Northern Ireland to fully explore the Irish peace process. The students then travel to Amman, Jordan and use the Irish peace process as a case study to examine intractable conflicts in the Middle East.  Looking beyond the Israel-Palestine conflict, the program examines larger inter-regional as well as inter-tribal conflicts. Students also have the option to add a four-week intensive Arabic language class to further enhance their experiences.

The Heidelberger Pädagogium is a non-profit language institute, located conveniently near the city center, and is one of the outstanding educational institutions in Heidelberg, Germany. The United Nations Summer Study (UNSS) program, offered by The New School’s Graduate Program in International Affairs, puts graduate and undergraduate students on the ground in the United Nations and in New York City. Unlike other UN study programs, UNSS takes you beyond a narrow focus on security and diplomacy to investigate development, human rights, humanitarian action, peacekeeping and peacebuilding, environmental, and reform issues. UNSS course work prepares you to understand and engage with contemporary issues, policies, and debates in international affairs. In sub-Saharan Africa, USAID works to help build sustained and well-governed states that respond to the needs of their people, reduce widespread poverty, and conduct themselves responsibly in the international system. Our assistance to Africa aims to help African governments, institutions, and organizations advance good governance principles and innovative approaches to health, education, economic growth, agriculture, and the environment. Interns have the opportunity to contribute to USAID’s work in Africa while learning valuable lessons about international development and working closely with our staff members. Interns at the Temple University Japan Campus work as research associates with faculty members, help organize conferences, or work on special projects with TUJ administrators. In the past, interns have worked on organizing major academic symposia, assisted faculty in their research (in the fields of history, anthropology, sociology, international relations, communications, and literature) and co-written articles. Interns also participate in seminars and discussion groups at TUJ, and regularly visit museums, businesses, embassies, and interesting sights in Tokyo and Yokohama

Interns/fellows will work as unpaid research associates with faculty members in collaborative research projects, help with the production of ICAS related events, or work on special projects with TUJ administrators. For students who have their own research project (such as writing a senior undergraduate or MA thesis), programs may be devised that suit their interests while contributing to the research activities of TUJ faculty. Interns/fellows will participate in seminars and discussion groups (inside and outside TUJ), visits to embassies, media, businesses, museums and other interesting sights in and around Tokyo. They will also be provided with networking opportunities in the professional communities of Japanese academia and government, and can participate in tours and other activities within Tokyo and across Japan, which TUJ organizes for its own students.

GYC’s programs provide young leaders (ages 14-35) from a wide range of ethnic, national, economic and religious backgrounds with opportunities to learn more about human rights and enhance their ability to take action on pressing human rights issues. In 3-4 weeks, GYC programs weave together a three-tiered approach. First, delegates get experiential development training through an interactive cross-cultural human rights education workshop. Second, they engage in site visits with key stakeholders in local human rights efforts, including with members of government, international and local NGOs, and members of the community. Third,  delegates get on-the-ground experience volunteering with local human rights organizations and doing human rights work. Throughout all three components of the program, delegates develop skills critical to grassroots organizing, conflict transformation, human rights activism and leadership, and technical support for on-going organizing efforts. They also become more deeply integrated into an international community of youth activists who are actively promoting and protecting human rights, as well as educating and inspiring the next generation to work for peaceful change.


SCHOLARSHIPS, FELLOWSHIPS AND GRANTS

Fellowship: Laura W. Bush Traveling Fellowship

The fellowship helps fund a proposal designed by the applicant to conduct brief work in a foreign country related to the mandate of UNESCO – using education, natural sciences, social and human sciences, culture, and/or communication and information to build strong ties among nations. The fellowship is intended for American college/university students who express an interest in international collaboration but as of yet had not been afforded many opportunities to travel abroad. During his/her travel, the recipient should be willing to participate in public diplomacy events arranged with the pertinent U.S. State Department Consulate, Mission, and/or Embassy. Following the travel, the recipient agrees to submit a report describing experiences and analyzing objectives achieved; share his/her experiences with others; and be available to make a presentation to the U.S. National Commission for UNESCO.

The Cogut Center for the Humanities inaugurated academic-year-long Undergraduate Fellowships each year for Brown undergraduate students in the humanities. Rising junior and senior honors students are encouraged to apply. Undergraduate Fellows are expected to participate actively in the Cogut Center’s regularly scheduled Fellows' Seminars and other center events. Undergraduate Fellowships provide an enhanced context for advanced honors students, including the opportunity for presentation of work and the benefits of critique from an exciting group of Cogut Center Faculty Fellows, Mellon Postdoctoral Fellows, Graduate Fellows and Distinguished Visiting Fellows.

The Harvey A. Baker Fellowships are awarded annually to outstanding members of the graduating class to aid them in undertaking graduate or professional study at a university of their choice either in the U.S. or abroad. The income for these fellowships derives from a trust estate established by the late Marion North Brown Baker in memory of her husband, Harvey Baker, 1881-1951 (A.B. Brown, 1903; L.L.B., Harvard, 1906), a prominent Providence attorney. The deed of trust for the Baker provides that each student selected must have high scholastic standing; have participated in college activities; and have shown qualities of leadership. The fellowship awards $10,000 to support graduate and professional school study for Brown graduating seniors for one year.

The Anne Crosby Emery Alumnae Fellowships are awarded each year to honor women in the graduating class and to aid them in undertaking graduate or professional study at a university of their choice either in the U.S. or abroad. The Fellowships were founded by the Alumnae Association of Brown University in 1914. The purpose of the Fellowships, maintained in honor of the second dean of the Women’s College in Brown University, is to stimulate the intellectual life of undergraduate students. The Emery Fellowship is awarded on the basis of scholarly ability and excellence of character. The fellowship awards $10,000 to support graduate and professional school study for Brown graduating seniors for one year.

Applicants must be a current full-time student working towards a Brown University undergraduate degree. Eligible projects must have been completed for a semester-long, credit-bearing course, either for a class or an independent study, but cannot be a senior honors thesis.

In partnership with the Office of the Dean of the College, the Brown University Library sponsors the annual Undergraduate Research Prize. The purpose of the prize is to recognize excellence in undergraduate research projects that make creative and extensive use of the Brown University Library's collections, including, but not limited to, print resources, databases, primary resources, and materials in all media. The project may take the form of a traditional paper, a database, a website or other digital project. Up to two prizes of $750 each may be given. Prize recipients will be honored at a Library reception and will be asked to give a short presentation on their research projects. Prize winning projects will be honored on the Brown University Library website and added to the Brown Archives.

Research at Brown (RAB) grants support student-initiated research projects in the sciences, the humanities, and the fine arts. Established in memory of Michael Vinay Bhatia '99, who died in May 2008 in Afghanistan, where he was working as a social scientist in consultation with the U.S. military, the Fund underwrites field work, study abroad, or thesis research by IR concentrators working on peace-keeping and conflict studies. The Program in Judaic Studies aims to promote and support the study of Jews and Judaism across Brown. To that end, the Department offers research grants for Brown undergraduate and graduate students working in related fields. Funds may be used in a wide variety of ways, including acquisition of research materials, traveling to research sites, etc. Preference will be given to those who have taken courses in or who plan to work with an adviser in the Program in Judaic Studies. Grant proposals can be for as little as $250 but should not exceed $1000. Application materials should be sent to Susan Rottenberg and should include a 1-2 page description of the project that explains how the student will use the funds. The application should also include the name of a faculty reference.  The Program in Judaic Studies accepts applications at any point in the academic year for as long as funds are available.

The Institute of International Studies, Charles University in Prague, offers four Master’s Degree Programmes taught in English:

  • Balkan, Eurasian and Central European Studies (BECES): The BECES program offers English-speaking students  a deep and versatile exploration of “the East”, understood as the territory composed of Central Europe, the Balkan peninsula, and the countries of the former Soviet Union, including those in the Caucasus and Central Asia. Primary attention is paid to modern history, politics and diplomacy, as well as to fundamental social, cultural and economic problems. The program also offers students the chance to learn or improve their knowledge of the Czech language and some other languages of the area.
  • Central European Comparative Studies (CECS): The CECS program focuses on the region composed of Germany, Austria and the Visegrad countries (the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Poland and Hungary) with overlapping interest in neighboring countries. The program is offered either in the form of a full-time program of study or as part-time study (optimized for working people with classes held on Friday afternoons).
  • European Politics and Society (EPS): The EPS is a multidisciplinary two-year Joint Master Degree Program linking the fields of European politics, contemporary history and culture, economy, international relations and policy-making. The first semester of the EPS Program is based on Master level introductory courses (in Prague), the second semester focuses on EU related courses (Krakow, Leiden). In the third and fourth semesters, the program offers four different study tracks reflecting the diverse expertise of the Consortium members (Prague, Krakow, Barcelona, and Leiden). Each track combines various elective courses, research methods training, an internship and language tuition with an advanced research dissertation supervised by key staff from each Partner University.
  • Master in Area Studies (MAS): The MAS interdisciplinary program offers expert knowledge and analytical-synthetic skills focused on modern history and current developments of Europe, Eurasia, and North America.
  • Institute of International Studies, Charles University in Prague offers one double-degree program taught in English in cooperation with the School of Slavonic and East European Studies (SSEES)International Masters in Economy, State and Society (IMESS): IMESS is a leading international double-degree program in comparative area studies. Divided into three tracks (Economy & Business, Politics & Security, Nation, History & Society), IMESS focuses on the culture, economy, history, politics and society of Central, Eastern and South-Eastern Europe and Eurasia.
