MCGC Neighbors Weekly News Blast

MCGC Neighbors’ Small Business Expo!!

MCGC Neighbors is again this year organizing and sponsoring the Small Business Expo for the neighborhood.  The date is October 4 from noon – 3PM at our Community Center.  If you are a small business owner, this Expo will be a great local opportunity for you to showcase your products or services to your Murphy Creek neighbors.

Last year we had exhibitors from businesses including travel, skin care, cosmetics, personal training, home food delivery, floor care, shoes, insurance, candles, totes and bags, books, kitchen utensils, real estate, day spa, etc.  This year we hope to add exhibitors including pet sitters, home computer support,  interior decorators, contractors, landscapers, etc.

Also this year, we are adding to the format the opportunity to not only provide information, show your business’ products, or to book parties, but to also sell your products directly to the neighbors attending. We are encouraging artists and crafters to participate.  Join us if you create jewelry, paint watercolors, knit scarves, create hats, make greeting cards, carve wooden toys, take photos, etc. etc.

If you are a paid MCGC Neighbors member, Membership Partner or an advertiser in our News Blast, there will be no fee to participate.  Membership in MCGC Neighbors is only $15/year.  Join us and enjoy all the discounts members receive - and participation in the Expo will be free.  We will provide you with a space at the Community Center with a table and chairs for displaying, discussing and selling your products and services; and we will be advertising and promoting the event throughout the neighborhood to ensure a big turnout by the neighbors.

Participation is open to neighborhood residents and to any businesses, artists and crafters that offer products/services that may be of interest to the community. If you have friends in Murphy Creek or outside the neighborhood who may want to participate but do not receive our News Blast, we encourage you to pass this information along.

If you are potentially interested in participating, let us hear from you by completing the Small Business Expo form on our website or by emailing us with questions.  We’ll be creating a list of potential businesses/vendors and will be contacting you concerning additional details.

Look for more information about the Small Business Expo in upcoming weekly editions of the MCGC Neighbors’ News Blast!

Oil & Gas Development Applications near Murphy Creek

Well Permits Update

Over the past few weeks, MCGC Neighbors has been reporting on the progress of two well permits proposed by ConocoPhillips. Our goal is not to overwhelm or distress you; our goal is to remain true to our mission statement by keeping you informed about issues that can impact the neighborhood.

Because these two wells would be located more than 1,000 feet from a platted residential lot, they are automatically classified as a permitted use and may be administratively processed by the Director of Planning.

However, ConocoPhillips is requesting variances from the zoning codes, and the City is currently intending to continue processing these applications administratively, i.e. without going before the Planning and Zoning Commission with a public hearing. According to City Code Section 146-1207, Oil and Gas Facilities (H) Waivers. 2.Criteria, "The planning and zoning commission shall grant a waiver to an applicant if the commission after considering the evidence presented at a public hearing finds either of the following..."

The point is, if variances are to be granted, the City Code clearly seems to indicate that a public hearing needs to be held before the planning and zoning commission. The request for variances seems to indicate that the application can no longer be processed administratively. We have asked City staff why a public hearing before the planning commission is not currently being planned, and we were told this would be referred to the legal department for clarification. We are anticipating a response soon. You may read Section 146-1207 of the City Code here.

The City sent its well permit responses to ConocoPhillips on July 25. You can read those responses on the City’s website for Eastern Hills and Cherry Creek Vista. Once you get to the Development Application Review page of each application, click on the View button to the right of 1st Review Comments to see the City's response.

We received comments from a retired Registered Professional Engineer with 40+ years of experience in Oil & Gas developments. He sent his comments directly to the City, but due to some confusion, they don’t appear in the City’s responses to ConocoPhillips. We spoke to a City staff member and were made aware that these comments have been forwarded to ConocoPhillips and will be addressed in their second submission. So that you can see them now, we have posted his comments on our website for your review.

It may be a few weeks, but we will notify you when we receive updates.
