Reeeallly Useful Home Safety Information

Our Guest Writer this week is Teri Finley who is a Fire and Security expert for ADT.  You will find in this article a wealth of useful tips that you may not have considered.  Keeping  our neighborhood a safe place to live is important to all of us.   You can contact Teri at Tfinley@adt.com to ask follow-up questions about the safety tips, to schedule a free home security review, or to obtain information on potential discounts that may be available to Murphy Creek neighbors.  Thanks so much to Teri for providing all of us with the following tips.

  • Inspect smoke and carbon monoxide detectors for dust build up.  Don’t wait for a battery to go dead. (And most of the detectors in our neighborhood have the annoying and continuous beeping sound.) Replace your batteries every year at daylight savings time.
  • Never leave notes on your door for service providers or visitors when you are not at home.  It’s a sign to burglars that you are not home.
  • To help prevent tipping off burglars, set your phone ringer to the lowest volume.  If a burglar can hear your phone ringing and it not being answered, the burglar will assume you are not at home.
  • Do not use indoor extension cords for outdoor usage.  A safe outdoor cord will read “suitable for use with outdoor appliances.”
  • When you are at home, particularly if you are alone, and the doorbell rings unexpectedly, talk through the door…don’t be embarrassed! ”Who are you?  What do you want?”  Burglars will ring the doorbell.  When you don’t answer they assume you are not home and will proceed to try to break in.
  • Train your children to not open the door to someone they don’t know.
  • Remove the red emergency pull string attached to the garage door unit inside your garage.  Burglars will shimmy the top of your door  to create a gap.  They then use a tool to pull the red cord which releases your garage door.  Remove the cord and put a coat hanger on the wall in the garage, so if the power ever goes off, you can release the door that way.
  • Always keep the door from your garage into your home locked - as well as your front and back doors.
  • Once a month take your lint catcher out of your dryer and wash it with warm soapy water.  Due to fabric softeners and a buildup of detergent and lint, it doesn’t allow proper air flow, which can potentially cause a house fire.
  • After having service people in your home, ALWAYS check your windows and doors after they leave.   These strangers in your home can leave doors and windows unlocked to come back at a later time.  And now they know the layout of your home, what is in your home and more about your schedule.
  • Did you know that 80% of burglaries happen during the day with an average break-in time at 11:52 in the morning.

This list is eye opening!  We hope this helps you make your home and our neighborhood an even safer place to live!

Murphy Creek Snow Report

Last of the Snow?

Hopefully, this past weekend was the last heavy snow we will have this winter.  Lynn Swanson, our Murphy Creek weather reporter, has provided the following data:

From 7AM Saturday to 7AM Sunday, we had .09” of rain.

From 7AM Sunday to 7AM Monday, we had 2.8” of snow which contained .27” of water.

Total moisture from the “storm” was .37” of water.  Lynn’s comment… “not very big by Colorado Front Range spring storm standards, but we’ll take any moisture we can get.”

At this point, for this winter season (2013-2014), Murphy Creek has had 19.8” of snow.  Enough - it’s time for spring!
