STH RECEIVES D.E.P. FUNDING FOR NEW 6,000sf GREEN ROOF ATOP THE GOWANUS ARTS BUILDING
STH is honored to receive funding from the Department of Environmental Protection to install a multi-level, 6,000sf green roof on top of our Gowanus Arts Building on Douglass Street as part of the “new” Gowanus Arts makeover. Thanks to the grant writing and design work of Brooklyn Grange’s most excellent Gwen Schantz, we hope to have the new “Gowanus Sky Farm” up and growing fresh produce sometime next year. Stay tuned for future shout-outs for volunteers to help lug soil, plant plants, and create our first green urban “oasis” for all to enjoy on top of our already rockin’ community arts center in the gritty Gowanus!
STH YOUNG ARTISTS RECEIVE
PARK SLOPE CIVIC COUNCIL GRANT
Spoke the Hub's "Young Artists Dance/Theater" gratefully received funding from the Park Slope Civic Council to create and "tour" a concert of original new dance and theater works created, performed and produced by STH's most serious young performer/choreographer/directors.
The concert will be created this coming August as part of STH’s Summer Camp Gowanee “Dance Spectacular!”, a three week daily dance intensive for 8-15 year olds, directed by Elise Long and with a stellar guest faculty. The summer concert will be performed again and toured to local hospitals, schools, senior centers, and community events in Park Slope in the Fall - exact locations and dates to be determined by the young artists themselves.
STH ALL STAR THEATRE COMPANY
TAKES ON MACBETH
STH’s new Youth Ensemble Theater, under the direction of Freestyle Repertory founders, Mike Durkin, Laura Livingston and Monica Anderson, performed their stark version of Shakespeare's Macbeth last Friday night to a captivated audience.
It was a real treat to see just how talented these young thespians are. The simplicity of the costumes and the minimalist set highlighted the subtleties in content and the work was cleverly enhanced by dramatic lighting and sound effects improvised by the cast. This Shakespearrean classic was brought to life in a fresh and engaging way for the 2015 audience of family and friends by the following group of enthusiastic players:
Trevor Lane (Thug/Macduff) Iris Rosenfeld(Witch/Guard/Narrator) Elise Struthers(Witch/Thug/Malcolm) France Webster (Lady Macbeth)
Freestyle Rep will also lead two Masterpiece Theatre Performance Workshop Intensives for young actors this summer at CAMP GOWANEE : July 27-31 (Grades 7-9) & August 3-7, 2015 (Grades 4-6). Register NOW!
STH is one of this year’s charities included in the annual Taste of Fifth fundraising and food tasting event! STH receives a percentage of every ticket sold, so come out and feast on some delicious local grub, while supporting Spoke the Hub at the same time - yummy!
Recent Camp Gowanee Fashionista Instructor, Lesley Ware, announces the publication of her new book …. Sew Fab which just hit the stores last week.
