Where are the Parents?

Hooray! The school year 2011-2012 is quickly coming to a close for the majority of metro Atlanta schools. Many parents have shifted their focus to graduations and summer vacations. However the quest for true Education Reform is a continuous process. It does not begin in August and end in May.
As parents, we have an obligation by the Creator to advocate for our children. This mandate crosses all economic and ethnic lines while uniting us as a human race. Many have heard of the famous quote "The children are our future", but are our actions as parents aligned to it? My sisters and I witnessed at an early age about the importance of parents advocating at the school. We always remember our dad, Lovett Stovall actively involved at the school. He served in every possible officer's and committee chair's position in the PTA. On several occasions, he was an officer after we graduated. One of his famous quotes is "What about the children-children 1st, children 2nd, children 3rd". My dad was well-known for strongly advocating, not only for us but for all the children at the Board of Education meetings and in our neighborhood. A special thanks to my dad because even to this day, he is still advocating for all children.
Parents, we must take a stand just as my dad and other parents like him took a stand for us. While demanding a quality education, they were often labeled by principals and teachers as "troublemakers". Where are the "troublemakers" in 2012? Why are parents complaining and not finding solutions? Did you know that your rights to be involved in school planning had been authorized by the Federal Government? Did you know parental involvement is a pre-requisite for certain federal funding received by the school system?
I challenge all parents to get involved. Don't wait for the school system to invite you to visit a building which YOU already OWN as a taxpayer! The failure of our students has a domino effect. It is imperative that we continue to build partnerships because not one entity has all the answers.
The key ingredients are RESOURCES that are available, equal, and efficient in our neighborhoods.
