I would like to take a little time to say thank you to all the wonderful fiber fanatics that have helped establish the community that exists at Yarn Asylum.  I love watching new people come in the shop and be welcomed by you and encouraged to join you at the table to knit, crochet and share.  New friendships are formed daily.  Old friendships are renewed.  

If you are new to Yarn Asylum and even knitting or crocheting, please don't hesitate to come join us soon.  The conversation can be lively and the bantering is prolific.  You will always find a friendly, welcoming atmosphere at the table!  The only thing missing is YOU!

We are scheduling lots of fun events for the upcoming months.  Lots of workshops, free make & takes and KALs geared towards getting ready for Christmas gift giving.  

As always, I am eager to hear your feedback and input about how I can make Yarn Asylum even better. Products, classes, special events - let me know what you want and I will do my best to make it happen!

April Showers Bring May Flowers
 
Join us on Saturday, May 3rd for a FREE Make and Take.
We are crocheting bouquets of Spring flowers!  

Then we will use them to make colorful hair barrettes and brooches.  

These will make a great gift for Mother's Day or for that special little girl in your life.

All supplies will be provided - bring a size J (or smaller) crochet hook if you have one.

Come anytime between 10:30 am and 12:30 pm.

No gardening experience necessary and we promise no weeding!

Our May knit-a-long is an easy scarf perfect for wearing during the warm months ahead.
 
Oh Helen! is an easy to memorize pattern and the project is light enough to tuck in your knitting bag for working on during those soccer and baseball practices.   

Suggested yarns:  Cascade Ultra Pima or Sunseeker.  Berroco Lago or Weekend DK.  

The pattern is free on Ravelry and we will have a copy for all participants!

May Classes


Yarn Asylum is pleased to offer our May lineup of Knitting and Crochet classes.

Class Policies:

Registration is highly recommended for all classes.  Class sizes are limited and we want to make sure there is space for you.  If a class fills up,  we will schedule another as soon as possible.

Payment for classes is due at the time of registration. Refunds will only be issued in the event a class is cancelled.  If you are unable to attend a class that you have registered and paid for, your registration fee can be transferred to another class held in the future.  (This option is only valid with 2 days notice before the class.)

We ask that you purchase your yarn for all classes at Yarn Asylum.  If you have any questions about weights or quantities, please feel free to ask us.  
We carry a wide variety of yarns for all budget levels that are appropriate for classes offered.  
 

Knitting 101 – 2 Sessions ($20)
This class is for the absolute beginner who would like to start with a small project. This is also a perfect project for someone who would like to brush up on their fundamental knitting skills.

Project:  Basic knitted washcloth

Techniques:  Students will learn the long tail cast on, knit & purl stitches and then learn to bind off.  These techniques are the building blocks for all knitting projects.

Skills Necessary:  A desire to learn something new!

Pattern:  Copycat Dishcloth (available free on Ravelry.com) A copy will be provided to all students.

 Choose Your Hat – 2 Sessions ($25)
In this more advanced beginner class, you can choose one hat that you would like to knit.  Come in and choose between the Barley Hat, Baby Sun Hat or Knit Night Hat.

Techniques:  Learn to cast on to knit in the round on circular needles, decrease with DPNs (double point needles).  Each hat is unique and you will learn different stitch techniques depending on your choice.


Skills Necessary:  Students should be familiar with the knit and purl stitches.

Pattern:  Barley Hat, Baby Sun Hat or Knit Night Hat.  A copy will be provided for all students.

In this advanced class, you will knit an entrelac scarf which produces a basketweave texture. 

Techniques:  Students will learn to make attached squares and triangles by pickup up stitches, increasing and decreasing.

Skills Necessary:  Students should be familiar with knit & purl stitches, increases and decreases.

Pattern:  Entrelac Scarf by Allison LoCicero (available free at Ravelry.com) A copy will be provided to all students.

Socks using Magic Loop– 3 Sessions ($35) - Intermediate

Miami Beach Shawl – 3 Sessions ($35)
 
In this class the student will learn how to make a light weight lacy shawl perfect for spring or summer.
Techniques:  Learn how to read a chart, work short rows and a decrease technique.
 
Skills required:  Cast on, knit and purl stitch, yarn over, K2tog and SSK.
 
Pattern:  Cascades Miami Beach Shawl
 
Supplies Needed:  Cascade Ultra Pima (100% cotton/220 yards per skein), 2 skeins, 32” or 40” US Size 7 circular needle, 21 stitch markers and tapestry needle.

Cost:  $35 for three 2-hour sessions

This class the student will learn how to make a pair of mittens that are knitted in the round using circular and double pointed needles.

Techniques:  Learn to pick up stitches, SSK, k2tog, m1 (make 1 stitch), and the kitchener stitch.

Skills required:  Students should be familiar with casting on and knit & purl stitches.

Pattern:  Maize Mittens (from the Tin Can Knit Series).  A copy will be provided to all students.

Fascinated with two color knitting, why not try three?  Learn the art of Fair Isle Knitting while carrying three colors.

Techniques:  Learn to knit using three colors.

Skills required:  Students should be familiar with casting on and knit & purl stitches and knitting in the round.

Pattern:    A copy will be provided to all students.

This class will show techniques used in correcting common mistakes in knitting.
 
Techniques:  Students will learn to how to identify knit and purl stitches, unknitting, picking up dropped stitches, incomplete knits and purls, unravel rows and other remedies.
 
Skills required:  Students should be familiar with knit & purl stitches.

Yarn Asylum will be hosting an ongoing year round workshop centered around this fantastic book. Participants can start at any time and work at their own pace.  We plan to meet on Friday evenings from 6 pm to 8 pm to work on our squares with you.  If you run into any problems or need assistance with a certain technique or stitch pattern, we will be here to help you!

Knit Clinic
 

Due to overwhelming demand, we have decided to open a Knit Clinic to accommodate those who need a little extra help with their projects.  

Fifteen minutes of quick instruction, help with patterns or fixing minor mistakes. This is a great way to get quick help with an advanced pattern or a little extra help in between regular weekly classes!

Please bring all your supplies – yarn, pattern, needles, tools, etc. Count all stitches before arriving (twice is always a good idea). Help is first come, first served.

Clinic Hours
Tuesdays 3 to 5 pm and Fridays 5 to 7 pm. 
Private lessons by appointment $15/hour. Call to arrange in advance.


UFO Sightings

Join us for UFO Group Therapy!
While you are welcome to come in and work on your projects at any time - we are setting aside times every Friday specifically for conquering our UFOs.

We will all be cheerleaders for each other.  We will encourage and inspire!  We will feel a sense of accomplishment when we finally cast off that neglected project that has been hidden too long.  Think about the excitement of freeing up a set of needles to start another project!

Yarn Asylum Group Therapy


If you are seeking a fun, friendly spot to hang out and knit or crochet - Yarn Asylum Group Therapy is just what the Doctor ordered!

Come sit around our big table and join other fiber fanatics as you work on your current project or get inspired to start another. The talk is lively and the enthusiasm is motivating.  

Drop in and meet new friends.  Bring in your problem projects and get advice from other knitters and crocheters.  Show off your finished designs and let us all envy your accomplishments!   Learn some new techniques as we share and enjoy the social aspect of our hobby!

Group Therapy meets each Thursday evening from 6 to 8 pm.  

Remember that the table at the Asylum is always open for you to come in and enjoy some time to knit or crochet. Spend your lunch time getting in a few rows on that scarf or stop by on your way home from work to unwind for a bit.   Free WiFi is also available if you are having a momentary Ravelry withdrawal.
