July?!  2014 is flying by. I hope you are all enjoying your summer.  Many of you are taking vacations, spending time at the pool & beach and getting in some relaxation time.  Don't forget to pack a little project to work on while you are resting your mind, spirit and body!

It is not too early to start thinking about knitting and crocheting projects for Holiday gifts.  At Yarn Asylum, we are going to be helping you with those endeavors.  We are planning monthly FREE knitting and crochet make & takes for Christmas ornaments. Our KAL's will also be geared towards projects that will make nice gifts for those special people on your list.

I know that many of you have already met Lola - our new shop pup.  She is a very happy and welcome addition to the store. Ed and I found her at a shelter when her previous owner had to go into a nursing home and could no longer care for her. She is a 9 year old Pomeranian who is completely deaf and blind in one eye.  She is also very friendly and spends most of her day sleeping under the table or looking out the window.  Because of her slight imperfections, she fits right in at Yarn Asylum!  She also startles easily.  We just ask that you watch small children around her so that she doesn't get startled and nip.  Starting next month, she will have her own column in the newsletter!

We have a winning name for our shop cat.  Sigmund!  The name was suggested by Cindy Smith and we love it!  It was hard picking from all the great names in the jar - so we will have to knit up some more cats to use up some of the other names!

Watch our Facebook page as I will be posting pictures and descriptions of the new Fall yarns as they arrive at the Asylum.  Our UPS and FedEx delivery folks are already carrying big boxes in the front door!  I am excited to fill the pegs, bins and cubes with lots of new fibers!

Have a great summer!

Until next time...

            ~ Penny
New yarns and accessories are arriving at the Asylum every week.  My personal favorite is the new canvas tote bag with the Yarn Asylum logo on it.  I am sure you can understand why!

These spacious bags are large enough to accommodate several projects - because who really only travels with one?! There is even space left over for small children, pets, and your medications.

Carry one with you wherever you go - take a picture that includes the bag and something to identify where you are. Be creative!  It doesn't have to be the Eiffel Tower or the Grand Canyon.  Send it to us and we will post our favorites on Facebook.   Who knows - you might even win a prize!

We are planning special sales with this roomy tote bag.  You will want to have one when those sales are announced!

Stop by and pick up yours today.  Priced at just $14.99, it is a real steal.  Okay, maybe a bargain.  If you walk out without paying for it - then it is a steal.  Not to mention bad kismet.

Yarn Asylum was happy to participate in our first World Wide Knit In Public (WWKIP) Day on Thursday, June 19th.

The purpose of this event is to bring fiber fanatics together to show their love of knitting (and crocheting).  We do this all the time at Yarn Asylum.  The difference on this occasion was moving the fun outside so everyone passing by could get a glimpse of what goes on inside the store!

Thank you to everyone who came and braved the heat to knit and crochet with us.  We are looking forward to hosting more events like this in the future!
July KAL

Our July KAL is Striped Trap by Andra Asars.   This is a simple knit using the stockinette stitch and two colors of coordinating yarn.

The pattern calls for 2 skeins of Berroco Folio and 1 skein of Berroco Boboli Lace.  Both of these yarns are in stock at Yarn Asylum and many color combinations are available for each.

It knits up so soft and light!  A very easy and relaxing knit for vacation travels, sitting next to the pool or curled up in your favorite chair.

There is also a Garter Trap version for those who don't like to purl.

The pattern is free on Ravelry or you can pick up a printed copy at Yarn Asylum with the purchase of your yarn!

Sit, Sip & Knit

On Monday, July 7th - SSK will take on a new meaning!  Yarn Asylum will host our first Sit, Sip & Knit.  Although normally closed on Mondays, the store will be open from 6:00 pm to 10:00 pm for this special social event.

Bring in your knitting or crochet project, your favorite beverage and an appetizer or finger food to share.

Special rules for this evening:
You must be at least 21 years old to attend.
Yarn Asylum is not responsible for any mistakes (i.e. dropped stitches, misplaced yarn overs, twisted stitches) that occur during the Sit, Sip & Knit.
Unless you are comfortable drinking from Solo cups, foam coffee cups, Addi's sippy cup or Owen's bottle, please bring your own flask, canteen, glass or jug.
Drink and knit responsibly.

Christmas in July

Starting this month, we will have FREE Make & Take workshops featuring a Christmas ornament for your tree. Each month will be a different ornament.

For July, we have chosen this miniature knitted piece with a tiny skein of yarn and toothpick knitting needles.   We don't want to exclude our crocheters, so we are going to do a crochet version of this ornament too!

Join us on Saturday, July 19th from 10:00 am to 6:00 pm or Sunday July 20th from 12:00 noon to 4:00 pm.

All supplies are included in the FREE price.  Just bring your needles or hooks and join the fun!
