Bulls Head sale completed

We are very pleased to be able to tell you that the sale has been completed for the Bulls Head public house on Friday, the 15th January. 
The purchaser, a Ewhurst resident, has met with the Parish Council and the working group over the last few months and shared their plans to turn the Bulls Head into a thriving pub and restaurant, with hotel accommodation. He is committed to making this a focal point for the community and will continue to work with us, and with you, to ensure that this happens.
 
Whilst it was not possible for the purchase to be completed before now, because of the moratorium created by the Community Right to Buy order which the Parish Council instigated in the summer, the purchaser has spent the time talking to architects and structural engineers and is ready to make a start on the considerable amount of work that needs to be undertaken to bring the building up to today’s standards. Currently, re-opening of the pub is planned for summer 2021. 
 
Further information will be sent out once the purchaser has all his plans in place. 
 
This is such good news for our community and we know that we will all want to give the new owner of the Bulls Head our full support, both now and into the future.

The Avenue, Cobbler's Brook 
and associated problems

 

 The latest update is as follows; Waverley met the architect on site last week with the builder that completed refurbishment work at the offending address in the summer of 2020. They had operatives on site in the afternoon checking drain runs etc. We are impressed with their commitment in getting the issue resolved as soon as possible. However, it is much more complicated than we thought following our meeting on 11 December when we identified the offending connection. It appears the drainage system the recent works has connected onto is the original drainage system and may have always carried both surface water and foul waste away from this property. Therefore it is not a simple separation of the foul and surface water drains affecting the new properties introduced to the drain run in the summer. The drainage system serving this property will have to be diverted somewhere, most likely to the nearest inspection chamber (manhole) which is around 100 meters away. The pipes will need to be laid underground and could attract requirement for licenses from S.C.C. and so on. We have produced some drainage plans which have been shared with the architects and builders to consider the most appropriate long term solution.  They have also been asked to contact the various nearby properties to see if there is a private sewer that they can connect up with.     

The quick response is clearance of the open culvert and deep inspection chamber in the The Glebe. This work is due to take place on Friday. We will meet contractors on site to check if we can shut off our estate from the drainage runs that follow the rear gardens of the lower Glebe and on to “The Avenue” where it connects to the open culvert. If we restrict the illegal foul waste and connect it to the foul drainage in the Council part of the estate we can manage regular clearance much more easily and it will stop foul waste tipping into the open culvert. The long term plan is once the work at the offending property is complete the drainage run will only carry surface water (and can be reconnected?). The worst case scenario is we will have to separate foul and surface water drainage systems on our section of the estate and divert to main sewage system and surface water to new soakaways. It’s too early to say what the final solution will be but as events unfold we can provide updates.

Corona Virus Testing

A mobile coronavirus testing facility will be at the Cranleigh Golf & Country Club car park, Barhatch Lane, Cranleigh GU6 7NG, from Wednesday 13 January until Tuesday 19 January. This is a new venue for mobile testing and we would like to thank the Golf & Country Club for the kind offer to allow the use of their car park.

A mobile testing facility will also be operating at The Wharf Car Park, Godalming, from Sunday 17 January to Tuesday 19 January.

Testing is available to all those with COVID-19 symptoms, but must be pre-booked online. Booking for this site is open from 5pm the evening before and on the day. 

Residents should book on the national testing portal: 
visiting www.nhs.uk/coronavirus or call the NHS on 119. 

Those without an appointment will be turned away. 

You can walk into the testing centre, but will still need a pre-booked appointment.

Rotary’s Waverley COVID Support Fund
 

  
 During the first lockdown caused by the COVID19 pandemic, the Rotary Clubs in Godalming were aware that a support fund had been established in and for residents of Farnham but not for the rest of Waverley. The Clubs decided that a similar fund should be established to cover all of the Waverley area to ensure that no Waverley residents would be without support if they faced serious hardship resulting from the financial effects of the pandemic. Waverley BC communicated with all Town and Parish Councillors on August 24th 2020, about this initiative.
Rotary’s Waverley COVID Support Fund (RWCSF) was established and launched in August 2020. It is run by Rotarians in Godalming, independently of local Government although both Godalming Town Council and Waverley Borough Council have contributed funds. We work closely with other funds providing support to those experiencing hardship in various areas of the Borough. This includes the Lions Clubs in Cranleigh and Farnham, the Busbridge and Hambledon Church Family Support Fund, The Henry Smith Charity Godalming and the Farnham Coronavirus Support Fund.
RWCSF has a website  www.rotaryc19fund.org   which provides additional information and a link to application forms.
The Fund will consider applications from both individuals and from groups. Individual applications should be supported by a referee to help confirm the genuine need and the Fund can help with grants toward the cost of essential household items, such as utilities, children’s clothing, bedding or other essential equipment.
Groups such as schools may apply for help, for example with the sharp increase distance learning equipment needed as a result of COVID shutdowns, and the application form is also available on the website.
Thanks to a number of generous donations, the fund is currently in a relatively healthy financial position, although further contributions would always be welcome.   We are keen to ensure that the Fund is as widely known as possible, so we reach all those who are suffering hardship at this time. Please publicise the fund's existence to your members and contacts, so they can invite any potential beneficiaries to apply.

SCHOOL MEAL PROVISION

"On behalf of Cllr Julie Iles, SCC Cabinet Member for Lifelong Learning, I am emailing in response to the many communications that we have received since a story regarding school meal provision was highlighted on social media yesterday. There has been further guidance and announcements from the DfE today about the reimbursement of vouchers and a contribution to catering providers which will help them distribute food parcels. Should you have had an update yesterday, please note these changes.
 
I hope the below briefing lines are of assistance.
 

  1. Throughout this pandemic, we have worked hard to ensure that young people across Surrey are properly fed and cared for.  We know many families are struggling financially and that hunger has a huge impact on a child’s wellbeing, learning and development.
  2. Over the two week Christmas holidays, we ensured that all Surrey schools were able to distribute food vouchers to their families with children eligible for Free Schools Meals, using the Covid Winter Grant funding we received from government.  We intend to do the same over the February half term and Easter holidays. 
  3. Following the sudden announcement of school closures last week, all schools, nurseries and colleges must continue supporting children eligible for Free School Meals who are now at home during term time.
  4. We support the flexibility for schools to choose to use either a local or a national supermarket voucher scheme, rather than provide a food parcel, where that is best for the family and child.  Schools will be reimbursed for up to £15 per week per voucher.  We know that for many families, a £15 weekly food voucher provides them with greater choice and value than a food parcel, and empowers them to feed their children well.   Families should be supported in every way possible to provide healthy meals for their children. 
  5. For schools that chose to provide food parcels to pupils who are at home, the quality and quantity of that offer must meet children’s nutritional needs, equivalent to a school lunch. Schools providing booster boxes have now been provided with extra government support to distribute any food parcels. Catering suppliers should also support parents with things like recipe advice and meal planning each week, as many are – an example meal plan and video for parents is here.  Also included is a photo of the supplies – the eagle eyed amongst you will note that the cheese and cucumber are missing from the shot but they are provided in this pack.
  6. The funding to make £15 available either for vouchers or food parcels should enable all schools to secure high quality food provision for children and ensure no child in Surrey goes hungry. 
  7. The Council Member for Lifelong Learning, Julie Iles, and new Executive Director for Children, Families and Learning will shortly be visiting a food parcel supply hub to see the parcel contents and delivery operations for themselves. 
  8. We will continue to support schools and parents wherever possible to ensure our young people are adequately fed and cared for during this already difficult time."

Cranleigh Lions Club and Dial-a-Ride Hoppa bus

are providing free to use services for residents who have been asked to attend Cranleigh Village Hall to receive their vaccination AND do not have access to transport.

There is a Covid-19 safe accessible HOPPA bus to take people from their homes to Cranleigh for vaccinations.

What do you need to do? FIRST –  REGISTER with Hoppa providing an email address.  To do this please either go online here  yourself or  contact your street champion to register for you, or phone Cranleigh Parish Council for help.

You can email enquiries@hoppa.org.uk    Once your details are registered on Hoppa’s database you can phone 01428 681701. to arrange pick up up to a week in advance.

You will need to provide your name, address, contact details and the time and date of your appointment.

This is a dial-a-ride service, and you should give as much notice as possible.

We Need To Stay Strong Work Together and Protect Each Other

 
 

Since February 2020, Assistant Chief Constable Dave Miller has been leading Operation Apollo, Surrey Police and Sussex Police’s Covid-19 response. In this open letter to residents of Surrey, he shares his Covid experience and reflects on the past 12 months.

Thinking back to this time last year, I remember using the word ‘coronavirus’ as something quite removed from my daily life. A talking point. A virus, rapidly spreading in the Far East, though not yet impacting us here in the UK.  As the police, we planned for its probable arrival. Developing a strategy around a possible worst case scenario as we would for any major incident and indeed, along with other public sector agencies, we had plans in place for pandemic flu.  But this turned out to be quite different.

We could never have imagined what we are faced by now, our country, gripped by a disease which is not only controlling lives, it’s taking them too. All of us have been seriously affected by Covid, whether that’s contracting the disease, lockdown, being furloughed, or losing someone.

I write to you now as someone who tested positive six weeks ago, along with my immediate family. Today, I still suffer from this invisible enemy, the coughing fits and fatigue for example. I have a brother who is working exhaustingly to keep a care team running in Brighton; watching him struggle as they attempt to provide 24,7 care to people who desperately need it.  As a school governor and father, I too am experiencing the challenges parents are facing as yet again they are asked to balance work and childcare at short notice.  Like many of us, I have friends in the NHS and hear how very difficult it has been and continues to be for them, their patients and families.

None of us are immune. None of us. And it seems to be a complete lottery as to how we'll be affected. We can all contract it and pass it on, some of us without even knowing we are doing it.

Through my role, I see my colleagues in the public sector doing all that they can to fulfil the commitment they made when choosing a public service career. NHS staff working night and day to save lives. Teachers rapidly adapting their techniques to continue supporting our next generation and the social workers, preventing harm as a result of complex living environments. It’s a true multi-agency partnership, police officers working on logistics, fire officers helping to manage vaccinations, people working through the night to ensure those who require PPE receive it.

Twelve months ago, while I knew this was coming, I was concerned, not fearful. Now I am. I am worried for the people who are vulnerable; for the elderly. I fear for our children and the lack of socialisation they are experiencing. I worry for the long-term impact of Covid on myself and my family. But most of all, I worry about the people who are not adhering to the guidelines, the ones not concerned by police enforcement or social responsibility. The ones where even the pain and suffering that this horrible virus is inflicting on humanity isn’t enough to prevent them from taking responsibility and keeping each other safe.

Fortunately, as we heard from the Home Secretary, Priti Patel, and Martin Hewitt, Chair of the National Police Chiefs Council, this week; the vast majority of people are law abiding and as a Chief Police Officer, I thank you for this. In Surrey and Sussex, the vast majority of people listen, accept the advice and take personal responsibility to play their part when it is needed most.

Yet sadly there is still a minority who think the law, and the guidance, does not apply to them. We are in a third national lockdown.  Our excess death rate has risen to its highest level since World War Two. And the infection rate continues to climb exponentially.

It is therefore not ok to be reckless or irresponsible because we are tired, frustrated, bored.  I know it’s difficult, but it’s just not acceptable to bend the rules, even slightly.  I say that as a neighbour, member of the public, father, friend and also as a senior police leader.

Which is why, as the police service, we will continue to support our healthcare colleagues by doing all that we can to keep people safe and prevent deaths. We will continue to adopt an approach which centres on engagement, explaining and encouragement, imploring people to make good choices.  

For those who blatantly disregard the rules, we will ensure they are dealt with when justified, necessary and proportionate because they are putting others at risk.  People are dying and that’s not acceptable.  Please respect that our police officers and staff have a job to do, both in day to day policing and in supporting the Covid effort. Expect they may interact with you, ask you questions, encourage you to consider your actions.  They are there putting themselves, and therefore their families at risk, daily doing a very challenging job at the best of times, catching criminals, keeping people safe, answering emergency calls, responding to incidents, investigating crime and the many other things the police service needs to do to deliver the best service we can. I’m immensely proud of them, but it’s far from easy even for our committed people.

As police officers we swear to protect life first and foremost. Which is why when every unnecessary contact is a possible infection, another hospital bed and potentially another life lost, we will do all that we can to play our part in stopping this virus.

We ask that you do the same,  stay home, save lives, protect our NHS.
