June 2012: Running to Attain the Prize
Running to Attain the Prize
"Do you not know that in a race all the runners run, but only one receives the prize? So run that you may obtain it. Every athlete exercises self-control in all things. They do it to receive a perishable wreath, but we an imperishable. So I do not run aimlessly; I do not box as one beating the air. But I discipline my body and keep it under control, lest after preaching to others I myself should be disqualified."
I Corinthians 9:24-27

Paul describes the Christian life in I Corinthians as a race and we as Christians are runners. For the last 20 weeks I (Dave) have been completing the Certificate of Applied Linguistics at GIAL in Texas, and man does it feel like running! In this time I took a total of 9 linguistics classes including: Phonetics, Phonology, Grammar, Sociolinguistics, and Cultural Anthropology, to name a few. Why would I do this? Well, when we arrive in Cameroon, after learning French we will embark to learn one of ~200 minority languages in Cameroon that does not have any of the Bible. Most of these languages do not have a written language so we will have to be able to:
  • listen to their spoken language and write it down (Phonetics),
  • determine how many of the sounds we hear make a difference in their minds (Phonology),
  • understand the structure of their language (Grammar),
  • identify how the functions of their society interact with their language (Sociolinguistics),
  • and figure out how best to engage their culture with the Gospel (Cultural Anthropology).
  • Oh...and we have to translate the Bible!
What an overwhelming task we have ahead of us! And like any athlete who trains before the race, I have by God's grace just completed a huge step in training which will be invaluable on the field. And this was no doubt an amazing answer to your prayers. In college I had to drop my linguistics class because I was getting a 'D', and I just completed an entire certificate in linguistics with straight 'A's'. How does that happen? GOD!...and specifically God through YOUR prayers. Our supporters, friends, family have prayed that we would be able to run this race to win, and God has been answering your prayers!

Dave's life during the Certificate.                                 Dave's life starting in July.

Of course, in the meantime Stacey was chasing around four toddlers, organizing materials for packing, finding us an excellent church in Dallas, maintaining and forming new relationships, learning French, and did I mention chasing around four toddlers?! It is indeed a race that we are in, but we are running to win! We run so that we would not be disqualified. Praise the Lord I have now completed the Certificate and we enter into a new stage where Stacey will be in non-stop school and I will begin chasing those toddlers, which is no doubt the harder of the two jobs.

Here is a rough timeline so you can better understand what has to happen between now and when we depart to Cameroon April 2013:

Happy 3rd Birthday to Kyra!

We just had the amazing joy of celebrating Makyra Jewel Hare's third birthday on June 8th. We figured we'd share some fun facts about Kyra in honor of this event:
  • Recently, Kyra has consistently interjected the phrase "Jesus drank the cup of God's wrath" into just about any conversation. I blame RC Sproul.
  • Kyra LOVES balloons! Everytime I take the helium balloon (pictured to the right) away from her she will look at me with a very sincere face and nod her head and say, "I can play with it later." To which I reply, "Your Jedi mind tricks will not work on me, girl."
  • Kyra can discern when Elias needs a diaper change from accross the room.
  • Kyra will only sleep horizontally in her toddler bed.
  • Kyra will periodically ask, "Mommy, will you please take me to Cameroon?" To which we reply, "yes!"

Prayer and Praise
  • PRAISE the Lord for sustaining us this past intense 20 weeks when I was in school and Stacey was a "single mom."
  • PRAISE the Lord with us that he is providing partners for our ministry! Richie Rice will be in Cameroon July 16-30 for a vision trip.
  • PRAY for Richie as he still has a lot to accomplish to join us in Cameroon including: vision trip, support raising, and finishing Bible school.
  • PRAY for Stacey to work hard and excel in school as she will begin her studies July 18th!
  • PRAY (and keep praying!) for Dave as he will chase toddlers, pack, sell and store stuff, figure out housing in Cameroon, apply for our visas, read lots of books to help our ministry, and try not to die!

We get a lot of questions about our life and our future endeavors (and maybe you have a few yourself!). As a result we have created a Frequently Asked Questions tab on our blog for some of the most common questions we get. Here are some of the FAQ's we have listed on our blog:

Thank you for caring about us and our ministry!  We'd love to hear from you as well - don't hesitate to hit reply and tell us how you're doing!
