1Last call to participate in the 2021-22 Mentor Program

The award-winning Mentor Program is a collaborative effort between Marquette University School of Dentistry, the Pierre Fauchard Academy and the Wisconsin Dental Association. The program is entering its 27th year and continues to be rated among the best in the country. We are grateful for the mentors who return each year to guide the next generation of dentists, and we are also excited to welcome new mentors to the program.

All WDA members should have received emails about participating in the Mentor Program over the past several weeks. If you have yet to notify us of your participation in this year’s program, please do so ASAP. The deadline was this past Friday. Please email Candice Wegner at cwegner@wda.org and she will follow up with next steps.

We will officially kick off the program’s 27th year in person on Monday, Oct. 4, at the annual Kickoff Dinner at Marquette. More details, including registration information and the names and contact information for your protégés, will be sent after pairings are made in mid-September.

2 How did the COVID-19 pandemic affect dentist earnings?

Join the ADA’s Health Policy Institute (HPI) at noon CT on Thursday, Sept. 2 for the first look at new research examining the impact of the pandemic on dentist net income. This analysis is the first of its kind conducted for the dental industry.

During this free webinar, HPI Chief Economist & VP Marko Vujicic will highlight differences in net income in 2020 compared to 2019. You’ll learn:
  • How general practice and specialist dentists fared;
  • If female dentists were disproportionately affected;
  • How hours worked differed year over year;
  • How much government relief dentists received;
  • And more.
As always, there will be time for audience Q&A. This webinar will not offer CE credit. A recording will be available after the livestream and emailed to all registrants.

3| Register now for MedPro and PIP Annual Risk Management Seminar

There is still time to register for the MedPro and Professional Insurance Programs (PIP) Annual Risk Management Seminar; this year’s topic is “Preventing Dental Malpractice Claims by Avoiding and Managing Adverse Outcomes.” The seminar will be held from 8 a.m. to noon on Friday, Sept. 17, at the Brookfield Conference Center.

Participants can earn CE credits, and MedPro policy holders may be eligible for a 7.5% premium credit for the next three policy renewals. A two-hour OSHA and CDC in dentistry course will follow the seminar.

4| Don't forget opioid CE requirement for license renewal

Tuesday is International Opioid Awareness Day, and along with it comes reminder that all Wisconsin dental license holders – regardless of specialty or prescribing history – are required to have two hours of CE on the topic of responsible prescribing of controlled substances for the treatment of acute dental pain. This is the last of two, two-year periods where this CE is required.

Dentists who still need to fulfill this requirement can access a free, on-demand web course presented by Marquette University School of Dentistry and the Wisconsin Department of Health Services, Division of Public Health. Dr. Joseph Best (Waukesha) and Dr. Russ Dunkel (Madison) are instructors for the course, titled, “Comprehensive Training for Dentists: Dental Pain Management in the Midst of the Evolving Substance Use Disorder Epidemic.”

The deadline to submit licensure information to the state is Thursday, Sept. 30.

6|  From the blog: 2021 is a licensure renewal year for WI dentists & dental hygienists

The State of Wisconsin requires dentists and dental hygienists to renew their licenses by Sept. 30 of odd-numbered years. The Dentistry Examining Board expects licensees to complete a licensure renewal form and attest that they have completed the required hours of continuing education and have current certificates of proficiency in both cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and automated external defibrillators (AEDs).

Although many in-person CE programs have been cancelled or altered due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Dentistry Examining Board has not lowered CE requirements for license renewal. The thought is that licensees can fulfill all requirements with the number and variety of CE offerings available online.
