Extraordinary People: Evan Swenson and Kevin Schneider

Congratulations to 7th Ward resident, Evan Swenson, who competed in the U.S. Olympic Team Trials for swimming in Omaha last week.  Evan, 17, swam the 50-meter freestyle sprint in 26.92 seconds.  Although Evan did not qualify for the U.S. Olympic Swim Team, or even swim her fastest 50 meters (26.1 seconds), Evan reports that the experience was great.  This will not be Evan's last Olympic Trials.  For more about this elite athlete who will be a senior at Loyola Academy, read Evan's three-part interview.  Evan is now training for the U.S. Open Swimming Championship in Indianapolis in August, where she will compete in both the 50-meter and 100-meter freestyle events.

Don't miss the news about Kevin Schneider, whom you know as a friendly clerk at the Dominick's store on Green Bay Road.  Kevin, an Evanston resident, is also a most enthusiastic and knowledgeable sports fan with a particular passion for collecting sports schedule cards.  Read more about Kevin and, if in your travels you acquire sports schedule cards or ballpark promotional items, please send them to Kevin:

Bond Rating: Moody's and Fitch Affirm the City of Evanston as "AAA"

International investment ratings firms, Moody’s and Fitch, have reaffirmed the City’s top credit rating for any investment, public or private.  According to the two ratings firms, the City maintains this top rating despite many challenges over the past several years and in a difficult economy, due in part to superior socio-economic fundamentals, a strong and diverse local economy, a healthy financial position, and manageable debt levels.  While the City's unfunded pension liability is notable, the City has committed to funding its required pension contributions and has made periodic supplemental contributions.

According to Moody’s and Fitch, the City will need to remain vigilant in the following areas:
  1. Maintaining balanced operating budgets and adequate reserves
  2. Continuing the commitment to fund pension liabilities according to proper actuarial assumptions
  3. Avoiding increases to the City’s total debt burden
  4. Maintaining a strong local economy
Maintaining the highest credit rating is a community effort that combines the City’s strong economy, stable tax base, and sound financial management.  For questions about the City's bond rating, contact Martin Lyons, Assistant City Manager/CFO (, 847-866-2934).

Evanston Police Department: Crime prevention, Text-A-Tip, Citizen Police Academy, National Night Out

The Evanston Police Department (EPD) reminds residents that they can help prevent crimes of opportunity.  Lock doors, secure your garage, and keep valuables out of plain view in vehicles parked on the street.  While EPD has deployed more patrols to neighborhoods where crimes of opportunity have occurred, residents can assist in crime prevention efforts.  Call the police non-emergency telephone number at 847-866-5000 to report suspicious persons or use the department's anonymous, 24/7 Text-A-Tip service to report crimes, suspicious persons, and suspicious activity.
To use Text-A-Tip, enter the number 274637 (which spells the word CRIMES) in the phone number line.  Start the text message with "EPDTIP" (to ensure the tip is routed to the Evanston police department) and enter your tip with as much detail as possible.  Once you send your text message tip, an independent third-party service provider assigns you a random system-generated “alias" to ensure your anonymity.  You will automatically receive a response text providing you an “alias.”  If EPD needs more information to process the tip, you may receive another response message through the third party service provider, preserving your anonymity.  EPD knows tipsters only by their “aliases.”  If you do not wish to participate in two-way communication with EPD, you can text the word STOP to 274637 (CRIMES) to EPD from responding.
The Youth Citizen Police Academy began July 5 and the next session of the Citizen Police Academy begins August 30.  Information and applications can be found here
Evanston's National Night Out will take place on Thursday, August 2.  National Night Out is a crime prevention event designed to raise awareness of crime prevention efforts and strengthen neighborhoods.  Put on your porch light in solidarity, hold a neighborhood gathering, get out for an evening walk, or have a block party.
Please visit the EPD Facebook page and contact Officer Ron Blumenberg, the 7th Ward's Problem-Solving Team officer, with any questions, at 847-878-2623.
