Nakatani RIES: Research & International Experiences for Students
Various Locations, Japan

The Nakatani RIES Fellowship for U.S. Students connects undergraduates with the best of engineering & science research in Japan through a 13-week, summer research internship program that is open to freshman and sophomore students.  

  • Pre-Departure Orientation at Rice University
  • Three-week Language & Cultural Orientation in Japan
  • Nine-week Research Internship at a Japanese university or research institution
  • Mid-Program Meeting in July
  • Re-Entry Program and Final Poster Presentation at Rice University
  • All travel, tuition, health insurance, housing cost COVERED + small stipend
  •  Be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident who is at least 18 years old
  •  Be majoring in a science or engineering field;
  • Freshman or sophomore year of undergraduate study at the time of application
  • Have a minimum G.P.A. of 3.0 or above
  • Be able to express a demonstrated interest in international engineering & science research, particularly with Japan

ThinkSwiss Research Scholarships 2017
Conduct research at any Swiss university!
Official scholarship program to promote research opportunities in Switzerland for university students in the US and Canada.  Students may conduct research during the summer or fall 2017 semester.

Eligibility Requirements:
- Enrolled at an accredited US/Canadian university/college
- Graduate or Undergraduate student (completed sophomore year)
- Provide written confirmation from a professor at a Swiss university that he/she accept you for a research stay in his/her group

Ecole Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL)
  • 3, 4, or 6 month internship in research laboratories of EPFL, starting in May every year.
  • Internships may take place in the following schools: School of Computer and Communication Sciences; School of Architecture, Civil and Environmental Engineering (Chemistry, Mathematics, Physics); School of Basic Sciences; School of Engineering; School of Life Sciences.

Nanyang Technological University (NTU) in Singapore
GEM Trailblazer Research is open to visiting research students in all research areas for a minimum of three months. As one of the world's leading research universities, we champion novel ways of thinking about science and technology.

Eligibility Requirements:
  • Nominated by home university to be eligible for the program
  • Provide written confirmation from a professor at NTU that he/she accept you for a research stay in his/her group 
  • You have the flexibility to decide on the period of research internship. It is recommended that the period of research should not be less than 3 months (12 weeks)

DAAD RISE: Research Internships in Science and Engineering
Various Locations, Germany

Dynamic internships for STEM students in US & Canada to gain practical experience in Germany. RISE provides professional relationships for lifelong networking, international community of scholars and researchers, and career building experience

  • Arrange paid summer internships for undergraduates (Sophomore or above) to help German doctoral candidates with research projects at German universities.
  • Pays about 600-700 Euros/Month  (average in Germany) and provides housing assistance

Pontificia Universidad Catolica de Chile (PUC)
GT students can conduct a research-based internship at PUC in Santiago, Chile with a designated PUC faculty member for any number of months during any semester or combination thereof.  PUC is consistently ranked as one of the top ten universities in Latin America and is recognized for its notable alumni, as well as international collaborations.  These are unpaid internships.  For more information on the Pontificia Universidad Catolica de Chile and for eligibility requirements, please contact or

International Association for the Exchange of Students for Technical Experience
 is an independent NGO that provides STEM students with paid, course-related, training abroad. Students travel to host countries (80+) where they complete PAID internships at companies, universities, and research organizations.

No foreign language knowledge required. 

Open to junior, senior, or graduate STEM students.

Amgen Scholars
Hosted by the University of Tokyo and Kyoto University, this eight-week paid research internship is open to undergraduate students (sophomores, juniors, and returning seniors).  Due to the shorter length, GT students will only be able to register for the nine-credit GIP course.

  • University of Tokyo: Undergraduates considering a career in biology or related sciences. Preferred candidates have biomedical research experience in the basic and translational science
  • Kyoto University: Undergraduates in Engineering, Biostudies, Medicine, Science, Agriculture, or Global Environmental Studies

SURE: Summer Undergraduate Research in Engineering

  • Students must independently find their host faculty in an area of their interest to perform research
  • SURE students work closely with a McGill Engineering professor on one of their research projects for 16 weeks in the summer.
  • Work on poster to present at end of research experience
  • Exposure to the research experience as well as opportunities to learn more about the graduate school experience and about careers in research.
  • Minimum of 3.0 GPA

Research opportunities for undergraduate and graduate students at OIST!

Hosted by the Okinawa Institute of Science and Technology, research internships are awarded 4 times a year for 2-6 months (typically 10-12 weeks) in Okinawa, Japan

  • Provided small living allowance, commuting support, travel fare and accommodation
  • Over 50 + positions in five major areas: Neuroscience, Molecular, Cell, and Developmental Biology; Mathematical and Computational Sciences; Environmental and Ecological Sciences; Physics; and Chemistry.

Industrial Technology Research Institute Internship Program in Taiwan

ITRI has R&D in three application domains:

  1. Smart living: ICT, cloud computing, and big data to develop intelligent services and logistics, next-generation handheld devices, and faster mobile broadband services
  2. Quality health: Development of technical applications such as biologic, combination medical devices, general medical devices, and healthcare
  3. Sustainable Environment: Green energy development, technical services for energy conservation and carbon reduction, and advanced green manufacturing systems

Each summer ITRI hosts over 30 international students for internships of 2-3 months. ITRI also offers a limited number of longer internships of 4-6 months during Spring, Summer, and Fall.Open to Graduate and Undergraduate students at accredited colleges and universities.

Monthly stipend and housing provided, as well as company site visits and subsidized trips to scenic destinations in Taiwan!

International Summer Research Program in Gravirational- Wave Physics (REU):

Optics in the City of Light Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU)" 

  • 2 months in variety of labs in Paris working with ultrafast lasers
  • Leader by team of faculty from Michigan and one from Paris
  • Students will spend one week in Ann Arbor at CUOS for orientation, safety training, preparation for living in France, and immersion into the Ann Arbor laboratories of the REU faculty.
  • Stipend of ~$5000
  • Sponsored by University of Michigan

Chateaubriand Fellowship

A grant offered by the Embassy of France in the United States.  Allows doctoral students enrolled in American universities to conduct research in France for 4-9 months. Opportunities are available for STEM students, as well as those in the Humanities and Social Sciences.

Chateaubriand fellows receive a monthly 1400 Euro stipend, a round trip ticket to France and health insurance. Knowledge of French is not mandatory but beneficial.

Whitaker International Fellows and Scholars Program

This program sends Master/Ph.Ds biomedical engineers, anywhere outside the U.S. or Canada for one or more of the following activities:

  • Conducting academic or scientific research in a university or laboratory or
  • Pursuing coursework at an academic institution or
  • Interning at a policy institute, or in an industrial or  non-profit setting
  • Other options are possible
Offers a stipend including airfare, living stipend, travel enhancement, insurance, seminar in Europe, and fellows only(tuition reimbursement)

RIKEN Brain Science Institute Summer Program

The RIKEN Brain Science Institute (RIKEN BSI), located just outside Tokyo, Japan, offers a summer program to train advanced (graduate) students interested in brain function. Attendees (45 international students per year) have wide-ranging academic backgrounds and are usually enrolled in graduate courses, or have recently embarked on postdoctoral research. However, candidates holding other positions are encouraged to apply.

Summer Interns work in a BSI Lab for two months and participate in the research activties of the host laboratory.
