Party time in Portugal

A fundraising challenge worth up to $US525 million was announced by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation in one of many highlights of the Rotary International Convention in Lisbon in June. For the next five years, the Foundation will double every dollar raised by Rotary up to $US 35 million a year, CEO Jeff Raikes announced during the final plenary session of the Convention.. In September this year, 85 young people of Timor Leste will gather for a week at Dare Refugio, about 20km outside Dili, for a week in leadership training. The week will once again highlight the need for youth leadership in a country in which a whole strategy of society perished during the turbulent years, leaving the younger generation with no mentors. When recent focus groups, in places as diverse as Buenos Aires, Tokyo, Sydney and Chicago, were asked to characterise Rotary and Rotarians, their responses included: “Business men”, “elite”, “secretive”, “old”, “wealthy” and “not sure that women are allowed into local clubs”. After more than 20 years since women were first admitted into Rotary, the perception that women are not allowed or welcome in Rotary continues in all regions. Read Story >

Pillowfight Day

Rotaractors and Rotarians from Districts 9910 and 9920 were at Aotea Square in Auckland CBD, NZ, running Auckland’s first ever International Pillowfight Day event on April 6. The objectives were to raise funds for Rotary Oceania Medical Aid for Children (ROMAC) and also promote ROMAC, Rotary and Rotaract. Read Story >
