Close Guantnamo
President Obama has just 50 days left to close Guantánamo

Dear friends and supporters,

Please join the Countdown to Close Guantánamo. Print off a “50 days to go” poster, take a photo with it and send it to us at info@closeguantanamo.org.

As we’re sure most of you know, President Obama is running out of time to close the “war on terror” prison at Guantánamo Bay that he inherited from George W. Bush.

Today, Guantánamo has been open for 5,438 days — 2,566 under Bush and, rather shamefully, 2,872 under Obama — and unless President Obama can close it in the next 50 days it is more probable than not that Donald Trump will keep it open.

To show our support for the closure of this wretched prison, which should never have been opened in the first place, and where men are still held without charge or trial after nearly 15 years, we have been taking photos with signs throughout the year, at 50-day intervals, reminding President Obama how many days he had left to fulfill his promise, and we have now reached the last stage in our countdown.

Tomorrow, Nov. 30, marks 50 days remaining, so please, if you can, print off a poster, take a photo with it and send it to us. You can also include a message to President Obama — and to Donald Trump, if you wish — and please also feel free to let us know where in the world you are, so we can show the geographical breadth of support for the closure of Guantánamo.

Please also visit, like, share and tweet the Gitmo Clock, another initiative of ours that counts down how many days, hours, minutes and seconds President Obama has left.

In our latest article, The Countdown to Close Guantánamo: With Just 50 Days Left for President Obama to Close the Prison, Please Send Us A Photo, Close Guantánamo co-founder Andy Worthington also introduces the intensification of the campaign for the last 50 days of the Obama presidency, with posters available for every five days as we count down to Jan. 20. Follow the links below for these posters, and free free to send photos with each of them if you wish.

Since we launched the countdown at the start of the year, we have received over 500 photos from from celebrities and concerned citizens across the US and around the world, and as the time approaches when Donald Trump will take over the prison, we want to make as much noise as possible to make it clear that Guantánamo should not — must not — remain open under a third president, and especially not one as troubling as Donald Trump, with his promises to send Americans there to face military commission trials, and to reintroduce torture.

Here are the posters:

For Dec. 5, marking 45 days to go.
For Dec .10, marking 40 days to go.
For Dec. 15, marking 35 days to go.
For Dec. 20, marking 30 days to go.
For Dec. 25, marking 25 days to go.
For Dec. 30, marking 20 days to go.
For Jan. 4, marking 15 days to go.
And for Jan. 9, marking 10 days to go.

We’ll make posters for the last days of the countdown available closer to the time.

As it is also #GivingTuesday today, we’d also like to encourage you to donate to support our work. To do so, please visit our website and click on the “Donate” button at the top right of every page to be taken to our PayPal account. Any donations, however large or small, will be gratefully received, and if you would like to make a regular donation, tick the box marked, “Make This Recurring (Monthly),” and fill in the amount you wish to donate every month.

As we mark 50 days tomorrow, please be assured that all donations will help to support our work into 2017, if, as we anticipate, President Obama does not manage to close Guantánamo before he leaves office. For now, though, let’s do all we can to encourage him to get it closed — with Congress, if possible, but if not then perhaps by executive order.

With thanks, as ever, for your ongoing support.

The "Close Guantánamo" team

P.S. Please, if you will, also ask your friends and family to join us -- just an email address is required to be counted amongst those opposed to the ongoing existence of Guantánamo, and to receive updates of our activities by email. Please also note that we can be found on Twitter here and on Facebook here.
