The ongoing farce of Guantánamo's military commissions
Dear friends and supporters,
In the last two weeks Andy Worthington has written two articles providing updates about the military commissions at Guantánamo, "The 9/11 Trial at Guantánamo: The Dark Farce Continues
" and "More Farcical Proceedings at the Military Commissions in Guantánamo
," covering developments -- or the lack of them -- in the last four months.
The articles cover pre-trial hearings in the cases of Khalid Sheikh Mohammed and four other men accused of involvement in the 9/11 attacks, Abd al-Rahim al-Nashiri, accused of masterminding the attack on the USS Cole
in 2000, and Abd al-Hadi al-Iraqi, one of the last prisoners to arrive at Guantánamo, in 2007.
All of these men were held in CIA "black sites" prior to their arrival at Guantánamo, where they were subjected to torture, and the pre-trial hearings persistently deal with the problems caused by the torture program, as the prosecutors try to hide evidence of the men's torture, and the defense teams try to secure essential information about how their clients were treated during the time they spent in CIA "black sites" -- up to four years in some cases.
Sadly, it appears that justice is incompatible with the military commissions, which should have been abandoned by the Obama administration, instead of being revived in the fall of 2009.
We hope you find the articles informative, and that you will share them if you do.
Via Andy's site, please also read about the principled stand
taken by a nurse at Guantánamo, who has refused to take part in force-feeding hunger strikers, calling it a "criminal act."
With thanks, as ever, for your support
