2015 GAP Report Goes to Zambia
In February, GHI Deputy Director Ann Steensland and Steering Committee Member Kelly Winquist of John Deere traveled to Lusaka, Zambia, to present the 2015 GAP Report: Building Sustainable Breadbasketsto an audience that included the Zambian Ministers of Agriculture and Gender. Ann and Kelly also visited farmers participating in a John Deere smallholder mechanization program, met a group of women smallholder farmers who are growing vegetables for luxury hotels, and attended the launch of the Zambia Advanced Maize Seed Adoption Program (ZAMSAP), a community-based partnership sponsored by DuPont Pioneer that provides farmers with hybrid maize seed and advisory services. Groundbreaking Biotech Symposium at FAO
The UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) held a groundbreaking symposium in February on The Role of Agricultural Biotechnologies in Sustainable Food Systems and Nutrition. Margaret Zeigler, GHI Executive Director, and GHI Member Companies participated in the Symposium and engaged with FAO Member State delegations based in Rome. A wide range of current and emerging biotechnologies were discussed, including improved tissue culture in plants and new vaccine technologies for livestock. GHI, DuPont Pioneer and Africa Harvest hosted a side event on the nutritional and agricultural benefits of biofortified sorghum. Farmland Partners Inc. Joins GHI In January, GHI welcomed Farmland Partners Inc. as its newest member company. Based in Denver, Colorado, Farmland Partners Inc. (FPI) is an internally managed real estate company that owns and seeks to acquire high-quality farmland and makes loans to farmers secured by farm real estate. FPI plays a critical role in helping the U.S. maintain its global leadership in agriculture by helping farmers access the necessary finance and land critical to their success. Ben Pratt is GHI 2016 Board Chair GHI is delighted that Mr. Ben Pratt, Vice President for Corporate Affairs at The Mosaic Company (center) is serving as Board Chair for 2016. In an interview for Harvest 2050, Ben described his recent visit toIndia where Mosaic and the Sehgal Foundation are helping farmers improve their cropping practices and increase vegetable production. "India exemplifies the many complex factors that go into the food security equation," said Ben. Click here to read the full interview.
