NOMINATIONS: BOARD VACANCIES: 2022

In accordance with SAOA Memorandum Of Incorporation (MOI), Directors elected to the SAOA Board serve for a term of three years. Once the tenure of a Director comes to an end, the Director concerned may make himself/herself available for re-election. A Director may not serve on the Board for more than two consecutive terms. A tenure ‘year’ is ‘measured’ from one AGM to another.

At the end of the 2020/2021 financial year, the tenures of three directors come to an end, giving rise to three vacancies on the Board. The Directors concerned are:

Nivien Subramany has served on the Board, primarily in the capacity of Finance Director but has also served on the SAOA Executive Committee as well as the Coding Committee. In her role as Finance Director, Nivien has been instrumental in ensuring the effective and efficient management of SAOA financial affairs and has contributed to the existing financial health and stability of the SAOA. Nivien’s tenure as Director has come to an end but is available for re-election.
Leané Cilliers has served as a member of the SAOA Board in the capacity of Marketing Director. Under her leadership and guidance, the marketing efforts of the SAOA has intensified significantly which has resulted in positive feedback from members and other stakeholders. Regrettably, due to personal and professional commitments, Leané will not be available for re-election.
Emmah Mahlangu has been A Director on the SAOA Board, responsible for Public Health, for two terms. During her tenure(s), the SAOA has made significant in-roads within the public health space, established important alliances and has participated in a number of community projects.  In accordance with the SAOA Memorandum Of Incorporation (MOI), a Director may not serve for more than two consecutive terms; for this reason, Emmah will not be available for re-election.

An Electoral Committee is appointed by the SAOA Board to oversee and manage the electoral process. The Electoral Committee comprises the following esteemed gentlemen:

Ballot Officer - Dr Raymond Mabaso
Scrutineer - Mr Johan Leiding (auditor)
Scrutineer - Mr Lucky Nkosi

A Notice of Nomination will be disseminated by the Ballot Officer in due course to include details of the process including timelines.

SAOA INVITED TO SUPPORT THE AXIAL SPONDYLOARTHRITIS ASSOCIATION OF SOUTH AFRICA (AXSPASA)

AXPASA are a patient support group that support patients with AxSpA in South Africa. According to their data, there is an estimated 60 000 patients in South Africa, of which around 5000 are diagnosed. The delay in diagnosis is considered a crisis in South Africa as the referral process is too long, and little is known about the disease.

According to AXPASA, Anterior uveitis (AU) is the most frequent extra-articular feature of axial spondyloarthritis (axSpA). From available world data, it appears that approximately 22% of patients will have had AU in their lifetime. Often the patients do not know they have AxSpA, but they may show AU.

The SAOA has been approached to join forces with AXPASA to increase awareness of this progressive disease in South Africa, with greater chances of diagnosing AxSpA.

26-MEMBER SA UNIVERSITIES BODY BACKS MANDATORY VACCINATIONS

The 26-member vice-chancellors’ body, Universities South Africa (USAf), has emphatically declared that vaccination is a must, saying that the best scientific evidence has found fully-vaccinated individuals are better protected against Sars-CoV-2 (the virus that cause COVID-19) infections, in particular against severe illness, hospitalisation and death.

University World News writes that USAf has urged university leaders to advise their governing councils that vaccinations are the most effective way to maximise the safety of students and staff. To read more, click here.

DISCOVERY ANALYSIS: COVID-19 DEATH CLAIMS EXCEED ALL OTHERS COMBINED

In the first eight months of 2021, COVID-19 accounted for 57% of Discovery Life’s death claims, more than all other claims combined.

“If we inspect the highest claims category per year for the past 10 years, we find that COVID-19 has emerged as the leading cause of death, overtaking cancer as well as heart and artery claims, which in previous years were the main causes of death,” Discovery Life chief executive Riaan van Reenen is quoted as saying by The Herald. In the previous nine years, heart and artery diseases accounted for an average of 27% of death claims lodged with the insurer each year.
