MEMBERSHIP FEES 2022:
NO INCREASE FOR 8TH CONSECUTIVE YEAR

The SAOA Board is obviously very aware of challenges facing the professions of optometry and dispensing opticianry in recent times. Nevertheless, the SAOA has ambitious intentions to further advance optometry and dispensing opticians to new heights in 2022. To this end, the SAOA has planned to deploy resources and has arranged capacity to ensure that the interests and needs of members are effectively addressed.

Nivien Subramany, SAOA Finance Director states, “Despite the continued intensification of effort on behalf of and for the benefit of our members, we are pleased to inform members that, for the eighth consecutive year, membership fees will not be increased for the 2021/2022 financial year. Please take note of our Early Bird offer. You will be entitled to a 10% discount if the full membership fee is paid by 31 January 2022."

HPCSA WARNS THAT ANTI-VAX PRACTITIONERS MAY FACE MISCONDUCT INQUIRIES

The Health Professions Council of SA (HPCSA) is investigating complaints lodged by the public against registered practitioners who have adopted an anti-vaccination stance.

HPCSA spokesperson Christopher Tsatsawane reiterated that a medical practitioner’s duty was to provide advice to any person on his or her physical health status and administer or prescribe relevant treatment. “Such advice shall be based on information which is evidence-based and scientifically accurate.” A committee of inquiry would determine if these healthcare professionals would be allowed to continue practising.

NOMINATIONS: BOARD VACANCIES: 2022

In accordance with SAOA Memorandum Of Incorporation (MOI), Directors elected to the SAOA Board serve for a term of three years. Once the tenure of a Director comes to an end, the Director concerned may make himself/herself available for re-election. A Director may not serve on the Board for more than two consecutive terms. A tenure ‘year’  is ‘measured’ from one AGM to another.

At the end of the 2020/2021 financial year, the tenures of three directors comes to end, giving rise to three vacancies on the Board. The Directors concerned are:

Nivien Subramany has served on the Board, primarily in the capacity of Finance Director but has also served on the SAOA Executive Committee as well as the Coding Committee.

Nivien’s tenure as Director has come to an end but Nivien is available for re-election.
Leané Cilliers has served as a member of the SAOA Board in the capacity of Marketing Director.

Regrettably, due to personal and professional commitments, Leané will not be available for re-election.
Emmah Mahlangu has been A Director on the SAOA Board, responsible for Public Health, for two consecutive terms.

In accordance with the SAOA Memorandum Of Incorporation ( MOI), a Director may not serve for more than two consecutive terms; for this reason, Emmah will not be available for re-election.

A Notice of Nomination has been disseminated by the Ballot Officer which include details of the process and timelines.
