1 month until Concert Time!
Please support the musicians in your family by supporting their home practice and class attendance, and by planning to come out to hear their performances next month. Music can develop a person's sense of self, confidence, and pride when they feel prepared and successful. We have been working hard to prepare our music and would really appreciate an audience to cheer us on!
A few families have asked me about Inclement Weather Policies. If you do not feel safe to drive, please send a text or email to advise of your/your child's absence as soon as possible. The studio will be open for all regular classes and rehearsals throughout the winter. It is easier for me to hold classes than to monitor conditions and contact everyone! Please make your own decision. Unfortunately the back lot is often a mess in snowy/icy conditions. Please be reminded that you are always welcome to walk around to the front entrance off Upper James as the sidewalks are typically drier.
With concerts on our mind, please scroll down for Concert Etiquette info, some words about Nerves and Anxiety, an Events Listing, and Cold-Weather Instrument Care reminders.
See you at the next class!
Performers should dress in "Black and White" - black dress pants or a black skirt with black tights, and a plain white dress shirt, sweater or blouse. Please arrive punctually at your concert call-time, not just in time for the performance. Musicians need additional time to unpack, get tuned, set up music stands, warm-up, and decompress before a performance. Expect to stay and be a respectful audience for all ensembles until the end of the concert, not to play & run. It is not fair to the other performers when some of the audience leaves before they perform. All our musicians have worked hard and deserve their moment in the spotlight!
Nerves and Anxiety
Feeling nervous about a performance? You’re not alone. Anxiety is a natural thing and it simply means you are worried about making a mistake… but no one is expecting you to be perfect! We learn through our mistakes, and our teammates, teachers and audience members are all there to support you, not judge. We’ll cheer you on through the tough moments and the feeling of pride you’ll feel at the end makes it all worth it (and it does get easier!).
Participating in performances is an important aspect of a music education – a moment to celebrate your successes and growth this term. Your orchestral teammates and teachers depend on you, and we need the whole ensemble to play at our best.
Please contact Miss Jennifer privately if you are not able to attend a performance and give us much advanced notice as possible. Even on the day of an event, a quick email or text is preferred over a "no-show" as a lot of planning is involved!
Cold Weather Instrument Care: Our fragile stringed instruments are sensitive to temperature changes. Please keep your instrument INDOORS at all times. Do not leave them in the car for any longer than the ride to and from your destination, or even for half an hour while you stop for groceries. When possible, keep the instrument in the car and not the trunk (as it is unheated). Be extra careful not to jostle/bang/shake your instrument, especially in doorways. Place the case on the floor gently. Arrive early to rehearsals so your instrument has a few minutes to warm up before you start playing on it. If you are walking/bussing with your precious instrument or have a long drive ahead, pack your instrument in extra layers. A pillow case makes a great warming layer for a violin or guitar, inside the case. T-shirts work for all instruments, too. A garbage bag on the outside of the case is also useful in cold-weather and rainy weather. Satin pillowcase violin-bags are for sale in the studio for $15, and exterior violin case wraps are $25.
