Concert season approaches!
December is concert season for musicians, and all of our group-class members can look forward to performances that are now fast-approaching. The Adult Strings and Chamber Strings ensembles are performing in November already, too.
Please support the musicians in your family in finding regular practice times at home each week. Students who do not prepare at home will feel anxious and frustrated in class and at performances. Music can develop a child's sense of self, confidence, and pride, but only when they feel prepared.
Thanks to everyone who participated in our Halloween video shoot. You can watch the video by clicking the image below (best watched on a smart phone due to resolution). Feel free to share the link with family and friends.
All orchestra and guitar band members have received a new binder of music for the year, including sheet music, event info, practicing tips, and a calendar of events. Some students have not yet brought in their $20 for the printing and preparation costs. ($15 if you are reusing last year's binder). Check the list in the studio for your name if you're not sure!
Scroll down for an Events Listing, Cold-Weather Instrument Care reminders and Practice Tips. See you at the next lesson!
Cold Weather Instrument Care: Our fragile stringed instruments are sensitive to temperature changes. Please keep your instrument INDOORS at all times. Do not leave them in the car for any longer than the ride to and from your destination, or even for half an hour while you stop for groceries. When possible, keep the instrument in the car and not the trunk (as it is unheated). Be extra careful not to jostle/bang/shake your instrument, especially in doorways. Place the case on the floor gently. Arrive early to rehearsals so your instrument has a few minutes to warm up before you start playing on it. If you are walking/bussing with your precious instrument or have a long drive ahead, pack your instrument in extra layers. A pillow case makes a great warming layer for a violin or guitar, inside the case. T-shirts work for all instruments, too. A garbage bag on the outside of the case is also useful in cold-weather and rainy weather. Satin pillowcase violin-bags are for sale in the studio for $15, and exterior violin case wraps are $25.
I often hear from parents that their child doesn’t seem inspired to practice at home or that that it is a constant struggle to get them practicing. Some have even said that since their child doesn’t take the initiative to practice daily at home, they think they should withdraw from lessons. Yikes! Don’t give up yet! Read below and Follow the Link for some further thoughts on this topic.
-Set regular days and times for practicing. Routine helps!
-Start small: Aim for 15 minutes daily (5 minutes for beginners!). You can always find this much time even on busy days and regular practice is the most important part of practicing.
-Play for an audience: Sit in while your child practices and cheer them on, or invite the grandparents over for a private show.
-Set short-term goals: Like playing an easy song from beginning to end or tackling that hard line in a new song. Feeling successful and confident is a great reward!
*Try a mute to dampen the sound if you're practicing while other household members are sleeping or studying. $5-10 for violin (size and muting quality), $15-20 for cello, available in the studio.
