Time for music!
Welcome back to our returning musicians and welcome new students! We have a great year ahead of us and I can't wait to get started. I hope all families have a great first day back-to-school tomorrow, and I look forward to seeing you soon and hearing all about it.
Start Dates: Private lessons begin following the fall schedule THIS Tuesday, September 3 with the return to school. Group classes/Orchestras begin NEXT week (September 9-12).
Attendance: Please arrive punctually (5 minutes early!) for all lessons. If you will be absent, give advanced notice when possible. If you must be late or leave early, attending part of your class is better than missing the whole lesson. Similarly, a small finger injury or a sore shoulder shouldn't keep you away from class: You can rest the injury and still listen in on what we are learning, practice your sheet-reading skills, and participate in other ways. Private students: please give 48 hours notice for any cancellations in order to 'bump' that week's lesson fee. Group class students: a 30-min private lesson ($20) is recommended for each missed rehearsal so you can keep up with your classmates and feel confident at your next class.
Music Binders: All orchestra and guitar band members will receive a new binder of music for the year, including sheet music, event info, practicing tips, a calendar of events, and other reminders. Please bring $20 to your first class to receive your binder. If your 2018-2019 binder is still in good condition and you wish to reuse it, you may bring it to the first class along with $15 for your sheet music and info pages.
Instruments: New students will receive their instrument at their first class. All students are responsible for the care of their instrument and any necessary repairs. Please review the 'tips' in your/your child's binder after the first class (returning families, too!). A cleaning cloth, cover cloth and starter rosin will come with your instrument outfit. You will require your own music stand for home practice.
Arrivals: We have entrances at the front and rear of our studio. Please enter quietly if the class/student before you is playing. Parents are welcome to watch classes but it is not required. Siblings must be supervised and young students should be picked up in a timely manner after their class.
Shoe Policy: We do "Shoes Off" at the studio for all students, teachers, and family members. This helps protect our beautiful instruments and their cases which we place on the floor as well as keep our space tidy. Feel free to bring slippers or indoor-only shoes. Children should be reminded to wear clean socks. Thanks in advance for your courtesy.
Parking: Parking is available for 75 cents/hour in the municipal lot behind our building, accessible off both Genessee St and Brucedale Ave. There is also some free street parking in the neighbourhood. Please do not park in the spaces reserved for other buildings and their tenants directly behind the studio.
Supplies: All students should have their own music stand ($25 or $30 for extra-tall) and violin/cello students should have rosin ($4), a cleaning cloth ($5), and a cover cloth ($10). You can purchase these supplies at the Bel Canto studio, as well as violin shoulder rests ($15), new strings ($5+), practice mutes ($5+), electronic tuner/metronomes ($20), cello endpin stoppers ($10-$15) and more.
Events Calendar: A list of special dates (performances/ special events/ holidays) for the Sept-Dec will be located in the front of your/your child's music binder after the first class and in the October newsletter. Updates, changes and further information will always be posted in this monthly newsletter.
