... and we're off!
September his flying by and we will soon be starting our 2nd month of fall classes. The term is off to a great start with the group classes preparing for the Halloween video shoot and private students working on fresh music. Scroll down for Halloween info, a Fall/Winter Events Listing, Instrument Care reminders and Practice Tips. See you at the next lesson!
Music Binders: All orchestra and guitar band members have received a new binder of music for the year, including sheet music, event info, practicing tips, and a calendar of events. Please bring $20 to your next class for the printing and preparation costs. If your 2018-2019 binder is still in good condition and you wish to reuse it, you may bring it to the first class along with $15 for your sheet music and info pages instead.
Halloween Music Video Shoot:
Each year we choose a theme and create our own little Halloween music video. This year's theme is "the Lion King." Any animal costume is appropriate and can be as low-key (face paint and and cat ears) or developed (full costume!) as you'd like. This is a fun activity for all our kids' classes and works so well when everyone participates! Click Here to see videos from previous years.
Junior & Senior Violin/Cello: Filming for the video will take place in your regular class on Thurs, Oct 24. Wear your costume!
Beginner Violin/Cello and Guitar: Filming will take place on Mon, Oct 21 (Guitar) and Wed, Oct 23 (Violin/Cello). Wear your costumes to your regular class this day! You are also invited to join the Junior violin/cello students on Thursday, Oct 24 from 6:45-7:30 for a special Choreographed dance/acting component to our music video. You will not need your instruments. Wear your Lion King - themed costumes to both days!
Instrument Care: Our fragile stringed instruments are sensitive to temperature changes. Please keep your instrument INDOORS at all times. Do not leave them in the car overnight after class or all day while you're at work/school, or even for half an hour while you stop for groceries. When possible, keep the instrument in the car and not the trunk (as it is unheated). Be extra careful not to jostle/bang/shake your instrument, especially in doorways.
I often hear from parents that their child doesn’t seem inspired to practice at home or that that it is a constant struggle to get them practicing. Some have even said that since their child doesn’t take the initiative to practice daily at home, they think they should withdraw from lessons. Yikes! Don’t give up yet! Read below and Follow the Link for some further thoughts on this topic.
-Set regular days and times for practicing. Routine helps!
-Start small: Aim for 15 minutes daily (5 minutes for beginners!). You can always find this much time even on busy days and regular practice is the most important part of practicing.
-Play for an audience: Sit in while your child practices and cheer them on, or invite the grandparents over for a private show.
-Set short-term goals: Like playing an easy song from beginning to end or tackling that hard line in a new song. Feeling successful and confident is a great reward!
