WHY BOOKS MATTER...
"I have waited fifteen years for this moment..."
Ta-Nehisi Coates, upon winning the National Book Award for Between the World in Me.  He dedicated his award to his college friend, Prince Jones.

Dear Fellow Readers,

Peace, love, books -- that is our theme for this month.  Oh, if it were all so simple!  It isn't, of course, but if you are looking for a few restorative moments, what better place to find them than in your beautiful, local bookstore.   The Penguin is sparkling with lights and our creative window designs are not to be missed, especially our amazing "book tree," created by  Kenna, our newest student bookseller.

We had our busiest day of the year on Small Business Saturday, despite the dreary weather, and the Penguin has been abuzz with increased holiday traffic ever since.  The store is chock-full of wonderful things to buy for the holidays, including some extra special items that we do not usually have throughout the year.

I am happy to share the news that our wonderful Mary Ferris, Penguin Assistant Manager-extraordinaire, has agreed to become Manager of the Penguin Bookshop.  This new title is in recognition of Mary's extraordinary dedication to the Penguin, and her invaluable help to and support of me as I became the new owner.  Mary has taken on an increasing number of important responsibilities over these last two years, and will continue to oversee the day-to-day operations of the store with her customary flair and sense of humor.  Thank you, Mary!

Wishing you peace, love, & good books, all of which can be found in abundance at the Penguin.

Happy Holidays,

Susan & the Penguin Team

Polar Express
by Chris Van Allsburg

One of my all-time favorite holiday stories. When my girls were very young, we would read this book together every night during the month of December. It still makes me believe in the magic of the season. It still makes me get a bit weepy. A holiday classic that should be read by all ages.

Lisa...
The Glass Cage
by Nicholas Carr
After reading this book, you might thing twice before plugging an address into your GPS... Carr examines the many effects automation is having on humans as a species, and what the implications might be for us in the future.  As technological advances continue making our day to day lives easier, we might want to consider some of the longer term and unintended consequences that our reliance on computers and technology may portend.  This book is an engrossing read and, best of all, will make you think!

Elephant & Piggie: Take a Nap
by Mo Willems

With a four-year old and a one- year old in the house, we read a lot of books aloud. Well, we read the same book aloud many, many,  (many) times! Right now, my daughter loves everything Elephant & Piggie. The stories are very funny- even for the adult who is reading- engaging, and they are great beginning reader books. My son is a little young to understand the stories, but he loves everything his sister loves so he will sit for an Elephant & Piggie book, too. I Will Take a Nap and Should I Share My Ice Cream are current favorites. Although, We Are in A Book ranks pretty high as well.
