"I hope March is a guide for today's activists. It took raw courage for young people to volunteer to go to Mississippi in the summer of 1964, and unrelenting faith in the power of democracy..."

- Andrew Aydin, winner of the National Book Award with Congressman John Lewis and artist Nate Powell, for their graphic novel trilogy on Lewis's life
Dear Friends of the Penguin,

Our team is taking a deep breath after a record-breaking Black Friday and Small Business Saturday -- thank you!  We are ready for a great holiday season, with extended hours and a store that is bursting at the seams with an impressive array of books.  And in the unlikely event that you can't find what you're looking for on our shelves, we can order most books up until December 21st and still have them here by December 23rd.

Please stop by on Lite-Up night this Friday, December 2nd.  Our Storytime Leader, Stefanie, will be here with her five children, entertaining us with special music at 6:30PM.  Stefanie's Tuesday Storytimes have become a huge hit -- we can barely fit all of the strollers in the store!

We don't often present many author events in December because of all the other distractions, but we couldn't pass up the opportunity to host Ilan Berman, Vice President of the American Foreign Policy Council, to talk about his timely book, IRAN'S DEADLY AMBITION.  Ilan is an expert on regional security in the Middle East, Central Asia, and the Russian Federation and has consulted for the CIA and the U.S. Department of Defense.  Join us on December 15th for what should be a very interesting evening.

Our other events this month are with self-published authors.  We have developed a mutually successful approach that enables independently published authors an opportunity to host their events here at the Penguin Bookshop.  As a community bookstore, we are committed to supporting all kinds of authors -- those just starting out as well as the big bestsellers -- and are always looking for innovate and sustainable ways to do that.

We wish all of you a wonderful holiday season.  And as our front display window says,

Susan & the Penguin Team

Book Launch Party for author......
Rita Wilson

Part biography, part memoir, Greek Lessons is a stunning work of nonfiction that explores the influence of the Greek culture on five generations of Greek women. The story gathers force around the idea “what if?” What if the liberal-minded American author went to live in Greece? What if her daughter remained in Greece to see if her summer romance was something more? The lives of those who moved to America, and those who stayed put in their ancestral homeland, are lovingly evoked in this richly rewarding and highly personal account of family life and social history. GREEK LESSONS is a vivid and original celebration of what it means to be Greek.

Emma's Corner

The Warden's Daughter by Jerry Spinelli
-- coming in January 2017!

Many people might think that being a warden's daughter might be cool.  You get to meet the prisoners and you live high on top of the jail.  But 12-year-old Cammie O’Reilly would disagree.  Cammie rarely gets to see her dad and is still mourning the death of her mom.  The only person at home is Eloda, a prisoner that is finishing her jail time.  Since Cammie is still trying to find a true parent and someone to love, she starts to turn towards Eloda as her new mom.  But as the summer starts and she spends more time with Eloda, Cammie still is never happy.  She loses her temper easily and soon everyone calls her “Cannonball Cammie."  Cammie even gets in a fight with best friend, Reggie.  Now the only person she leans to is Boo Boo, an inmate who treats Cammie as if she is her daughter.  Everyday Boo Boo and Cammie talk about Boo Boo's old life.  As the summer progresses, Reggie and Cammie renew their friendship.  Soon Reggie appears on American Bandstand, a popular show for kids.  After being on the show, Reggie and Cammie make a new group of friends.  But now the summer is coming to an end and the start of school is near.  Yet, Cammie still needs a mother.  Here Eloda realizes that what Cammie needs to do is return to the place of her greatest loss.  This is where Cammie’s personal adventure really begins.
