SUMMER WINE SERIES

In person and via Zoom.
Save the Date. Reserve your seat.
Events begin at 5:30.

Mavericks.  Pioneers.  Awesome humans.
Our goal is to highlight the incredible individuals who have built the foundation for Santa Barbara Wine Country.  Each of them (and so many more!) have played a vital and enduring role in our understanding of our viticultural bounty, its history and the incredible legacy we continue to build upon.  And they are still in it, full of grit and determination.

I am beyond thrilled to announce this incredible line-up of individuals who have forged a path forward.

FRIDAY JULY 30th, 5:30 pm:

BRYAN BABCOCK of BABCOCK WINERY

Bryan Babcock

Babcock Winery & Vineyards was established in 1978 when my mom & dad, Mona & Walter, purchased a 110 acre property with lima beans & fallow land in the countryside in the western end of the Santa Ynez Valley.

At the time, they were in the restaurant business, the proprietors of the legendary Walt’s Wharf in Seal Beach.
Over the years, my dad practiced a number of crafts, making him a full-fledged Renaissance guy. At the time of establishing the vineyard, he was also a dentist & a commercial fisherman.
Shortly after the purchase of the property, they planted a modest 20 acres to Gewurtraminer, Sauvignon Blanc & Chardonnay. No reds :(
In 1983, after building a small garage & purchasing a few wine barrels, they took a whack at their first experimental, non-commercial vintage.

I have been making wine since 1982. The first ten years felt like the decade of trying to find which end was up. The second ten years was the decade of trying to figure out which road to take.

After that I started to feel pretty good about my craft and the fact that this is who I am and what I do.

My only reservation in the third decade was that I constantly had these dreams about how mesmerizing the wines could be, only to have them come up a little bit short in reality. While I believe I made very good wines throughout this period, there was still this thing that the craftsman in me was chasing. Now, as I enter my fourth decade of winemaking, the most exciting thing is that the gap is narrowing. I feel as though my current wines are getting oh so close to what previously could have only been a figment of my imagination. Will I ever get it perfect? I almost hope not. But I do like the idea of pulling corks on wines that are like a dream come true. That’s when I will look at the words Optimum Quod Possum and really feel like everything is complete.

SO EXCITED TO HAVE BRYAN WITH US THIS FRIDAY!!!!!
