Tyson's Trade Tips - Sign Lettering: How it Works

How do you align all the letters on a sign?

Some people think that we cut out each letter by hand and apply them one at a time. That couldn’t be more far from the truth. We have precision vinyl cutters that accept special file-types to allow our machines to follow “vector” lines so that you end up with crisp edges and a perfectly aligned result. Our machines cut the vinyl with a small computer controlled razor blade and then we use transfer tape to keep the alignment true until we apply them to the sign backer.

Vector graphics are the key to a sharp professional result.
It can seem challenging to understand the difference between “vector” and “raster” art. But really, the difference is quite simple; vector art follows lines that a plotter machines sees and raster art is a group of dots that a printer sees. Think of the difference between the letter “L” and a photo of a landscape. The letter “L” has points that the computer follows like a game of connect the dots. A digital photo of a landscape has gradients, shadows, and highlights that are made up of millions of little pixels. If you scale up a raster image (like the landscape photo), it will eventually become blurry. If you scale up vector art (like the letter “L”), you can scale it up infinitely and it will remain clear and clean.
Vector art is the key to producing a crisp sign.
Our design team is here to assist you in editing and adjusting your artwork to make it production-ready for your sign, but you can save time and money by providing vector art whenever possible.
