Resolution for a Sustainable Future

PIC has invited MPs & Senators to help protect Canada's ecosystem and our futures by signing a Resolution on Population and the Environment. If endorsed—and acted upon—its proposals would help position Canada as a role model in pursuit of environmental sustainability.

Canada's largest national newspaper, The Globe and Mail, published a PIC Letter to the Editor, "Earth is Finite," challenging as facile columnist Margaret Wente's assertion that population increase-related concerns are alarmist and unfounded.

Scientists' Concerns

An article published by the Pew Research Center notes that concerns about population growth, articulated by English scholar Thomas Malthus and American biologist (and PIC patron) Paul Ehrlich, are shared by an ever-increasing number of scientists, a substantial majority of whom believe that the world's fast-growing population is a major problem.

Family Planning and Women's Rights

Contraception Coverage

Women who have just given birth are often strongly motivated to avoid getting pregnant again too soon. But, due to perceptions of higher cost, many US insurance companies will not provide coverage for immediate postpartum contraceptive implants where available in hospital following childbirth. A new Yale University study reveals, however, that to do so is in the best interest of women wanting to avoid unintended pregnancies and the adverse effects that often result from short inter-pregnancy intervals. It is more convenient for women and, by reducing in-hospital time and associated costs, it also reduces insurance costswin-win for all involved.

Sec. Hillary Clinton Defends Reproductive Rights and Family Planning

Encouraging News for Reproductive Health?

Presidential candidate Hillary Clinton is a committed supporter of women's rights that include the full range of reproductive rights; not least "safe, legal, and rare abortion." A powerful, cogent defence of her "pro-choice" commitment is revealed during testimony before a hostile Congressional committee.

Food for Thought...

PIC is the voice of Canadians concerned with overpopulation and its environmental impact. Founded in 1992, it campaigns to increase support for reproductive health and education, especially for women and girls, and for universal, voluntary access to family planning which the UN notes, "...could bring more benefits to more people at less cost than any other single technology available to the human race".
Fact: Continued global population growth, together with overconsumption, is incompatible with a healthy, sustainable future for humanity and the environment.
