The Winter Auction will start soon!
Dear <<First Name>> <<Last Name>>
We will start the Winter Auction on November 15 at 10:00AM EST. The Auction page will not be available before that time.
Profit from this auction will be used for the funding of printing new books, exhibitions and other activities.
This time, we have many Kimonos and Obis with Japanese Embroidery, which are from the collections of Japanese Embroidery Center and Kurenai Kai in Japan.
These beautiful Kimonos and Obis were given by Iwao Saito (the late master), who founded Kurenai-kai in Japan. He created the designs and stitched professionally in the workshop in the mid to late 20th century. Professional stitchers at Japanese Embroidery Center and Kurenai Kai learned color combinations and embroidery techniques through those pieces.
This event is inspired by the Japanese custom of “Mushi-boshi”, when special items are taken from “the Treasure House” or other storage areas and given an airing. Clothes, books, as well as furniture, are taken out of their boxes and placed in the sun.
That prevents them from being damaged by collecting dust, mold, or insects.
Mushi-boshi has been done for hundreds of years in Japan. It is generally done twice a year, once on a sunny day after the rainy season in June, and once again in October or November during the dry season. This needs to be done especially for silk clothes.
