Union Members to Discuss City Action on Pension Funds to Reduce Climate Impact
On Saturday, October 15th, District Council 37 iin collaboration with 350NYC will present  “Climate Justice and Pension Fund Investments: Divesting Public Pension Funds from Fossil Fuels”, a forum for union members, staff, and leaders. The event is free and will be held from 9am until 1pm at DC37, 125 Barclay St., Manhattan, Room 1.

Last year Mayor de Blasio proposed that the City immediately divest the city’s pension funds from coal and evaluate the climate risk and carbon footprint of the funds. This was approved by the various Board of Trustees and a firm was recently hired to complete the study, which is due early 2017.  Climate justice groups such as 350NYC have been advocating for several years to divest the pension funds from all fossil fuels companies that are contributing to climate change and threatening the future of the city and its residents. The forum will provide an update to union members who have pensions in the city’s pension fund and what next steps are possible.

Speakers will include Senator Liz Krueger, Council Member Helen Rosenthal, Tom Sanzillo, IEEF, Director of Finance, and former NY State Deputy Comptroller, John Adler, Director of the Mayor’s Office of Pensions & Investments and Chief Pension Investment Advisor. Jeremy Sanders, President of Local 1501,  DC 37 Climate Justice Committee Chair will moderate.
