This Week’s Welcome

Tena koutou katoa,

There are only two days of school left this term and I do hope that everyone will have a restful break and enjoy the company of their children. I’m off on a trip to South Korea for the first week of the holidays and will be doing a bit of sightseeing as well as visiting schools. I’m really looking forward to learning more about the country and its education system and I’m especially looking forward to visiting the demilitarized zone.

I am always ready to tell people about our amazing staff but I’ve decided to add a new part to our newsletter where I introduce you to a couple of staff members. Strong learning relationships are built on knowing each other and I think you might be surprised as you find out a bit more about our people.

Michelle teaches in Room 6 when Ruth Millett is on release. She began her teacher training when she was 16 - very young indeed. Apparently, the letters of acceptance for her and another Michelle were switched accidentally! Although she was born in Fiji, Michelle grew up at Hobsonville Airbase. She has always loved travelling, has lived in the UK and is really looking forward to visiting Alaska later this year. During the weekends and holidays, you’ll find Michelle spending time with her 4 grandchildren and riding pillion on a red Kawasaki 750 sport!
Before coming to UHPS, Kirsten taught up in Kaitaia, a very different experience to Auckland’s North Shore. She has had a varied career and, prior to training as a teacher, Kirsten was closely involved in the commercial fishing industry. Kirsten is mad keen on pop culture - particularly Star Wars and she also loves playing a game called Beat Sabre. Kirsten is our staff NZEI representative and keeps us well-informed. She is currently working towards a Masters in Contemporary Education and doing really well. Although she’s very humble about it, apparently Kirsten plays the flute and piano, she’s also got a very lovely singing voice.

Thank You

We'd like to do a big shout out to Bunnings North Shore and to Rachel Turner. In the picture, you can see a large storage box for our sandpit toys and a big selection of child-sized gardening products donated for Mrs Peterson's gardening group.

Board of Trustees

This year in May/June we will hold elections for the Board of Trustees. If you are interested in serving on the Board, please come along to one of our meetings to see what it is all about.

Our next Board meeting will be held in the staff room at 6 pm on:

Tuesday 21st May

All are welcome!

Trustees are elected for a three-year term. We meet once a month in the evening, and our role is to set the strategic direction and long term plans for the school and to be accountable for student achievement. If you would like to learn more, you could take a look at this website.

You are also welcome to drop in for a chat with Sue or Sandra in the office, or email Laura Hunter at

Learning an Instrument at School

Term one is drawing to a close! That means there are only three weeks left to enrol in Music Education Centre’s individual lesson programs before it starts in term two! This is the first time that piano and drum lessons have been offered during school hours at UHPS, making music education more convenient than ever. Lessons will commence in the first week of term two from our brand new learning facility located at school. Learning an instrument is not just fun and educational for your child, it will also:
·  Have a positive effect on their body, mind & boost their confidence
·  Increase the capacity of their memory
·  Enhance their coordination and improve their mathematical ability
·  Reduce stress in a fun and relaxing way
·  Be a healthy alternative to “screen time”
Lesson availability is limited so book today to secure your preference of lesson time and day!
